We have many favourites in Emmerdale, but few as loved universally as Mary Goskirk<\/a>, so when evil Celia Daniels<\/a> (Jaye Griffiths<\/a>) comes for her, we riot!<\/p>\n Acclaimed actress Louise Jameson<\/a> \u2013 whose career spans three decades \u2013 joined me for a chat recently to share her appreciation for the soap tackling the issues of grooming and slavery head on<\/a> \u2013 and confirmed that her alter-ego would soon be caught in the crossfire. <\/p>\n Is there anyone Celia won\u2019t target!?<\/p>\n Viewers have recently feared the worst as April Windsor\u2019s (Amelia Flanagan) family have fallen into Celia\u2019s grips<\/a>, with the wicked villain warning that throats will be cut and houses will be burned if anyone crosses her. <\/p>\n Given Mary\u2019s close proximity to her loved ones, she arrives home oblivious to the huge danger afoot. But she soon clocks the weird atmosphere. <\/p>\n Rhona (Zoe Henry<\/a>) knows that, along with everyone else in the clan, Mary will be fair game for Celia. <\/p>\n And the realisation will lead to a heartbreaking scenario for poor Mary that could divide the family forever. <\/p>\n To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web \t\t \u2018Nobody\u00a0has texted\u00a0her,\u00a0nobody\u00a0has told\u00a0her while she was away,\u2019 former Doctor Who<\/a> and EastEnders star Louise told Metro.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u2018So\u00a0she comes in going,\u00a0\u201cWhat\u2019s going on?\u201d\u00a0She comes in with that\u00a0journalist\u00a0curiosity \u2013 which was her profession, of course.\u00a0So\u00a0she comes in with that and then it just\u00a0goes from bad to worse.<\/p>\n \u2018What\u00a0the show\u00a0has cleverly done is a device that Shakespeare uses, putting the audience in possession of the secret\u2026\u2019<\/p>\n But while Mary doesn\u2019t have the insight that we do, an event is triggered that has devastating consequences. And while I can\u2019t divulge specifics just yet, Louise describes what happens as \u2018hurtful on an enormous scale\u2019.<\/p>\n It\u2019s certainly been a rollercoaster of a storyline, and Louise has watched it with as much tension as the rest of us. <\/p>\n \u2018I think\u00a0they\u2019ve\u00a0really pushed the boat out, the writers, ;s said.\u00a0\u2018It\u2019s\u00a0an epic story along Greek tragedy lines. Soap is sometimes\u00a0disparaged\u00a0but this really is an ongoing drama, as soap is often called, and I think some of the acting has just been sensational \u2013 so convincing and\u00a0really quite\u00a0difficult to watch.<\/p>\n \t\t \u2018Impressed is\u00a0probably the\u00a0wrong\u00a0word, but\u00a0certainly carried along with and\u00a0I\u2019ve\u00a0felt my heartbeat go up and\u00a0I\u2019ve\u00a0cried along with characters, which is ridiculous because sometimes\u00a0I\u2019ve\u00a0seen the scenes shot. <\/p>\n \u2018Once\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0edited together it really moves me and\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0such a pertinent, dangerous issue and\u00a0really important\u00a0that\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0depicted on television safely, thereby opening debate and raising consciousness of what happens to these poor young women.<\/p>\n \u2018For many viewers, soap characters are\u00a0not family but for some people\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0as near as damn it.\u00a0We\u2019re\u00a0in their living room five nights a\u00a0week,\u00a0they get to know us intimately. <\/p>\n \u2018I\u2019ve been vaguely known since the mid 70s\u00a0because of\u00a0Doctor Who sort of shot me up there, but it wasn\u2019t until I was in EastEnders and, later, River City and now this, there\u2019s a\u00a0soap\u00a0fandom that treats you in a very different way from other areas.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u2018It\u2019s\u00a0very intimate,\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0like they know\u00a0you,\u00a0they\u2019ve\u00a0met you, they feel like they can go,\u00a0\u201cYour hair looks very nice today,\u201d like you would with a friend.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0really interesting\u00a0to see how gentle the\u00a0fanship\u00a0is.\u2019<\/p>\n \t\t In particular, Mary being so loved fills Louise with pride. While she stays away from social media feedback, she is delighted with the knowledge that fans have taken her character to heart.<\/p>\n \u2018As a\u00a0rule\u00a0I\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0read reviews or look too much at social media but when\u00a0something\u2019s\u00a0really lovely,\u00a0inevitably someone puts it under your nose and goes,\u00a0\u201cHey, read this.\u201d\u00a0So\u00a0I have seen some lovely remarks. <\/p>\n \u2018I like Mary. What I love about her is the lack of censorship between her brain and her mouth. As\u00a0Louise\u00a0I wish I had a bit more of that. I like the fact she\u00a0doesn\u2019t\u00a0give a damn about upsetting anybody. If what she believes is\u00a0right\u00a0she\u2019ll\u00a0just come out and say it.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n \u2018I love the fact that Mary\u2019s so complex.\u00a0She\u2019s\u00a0rude and vulgar and caring and intelligent and daring and empathetic\u00a0and vicious, sometimes. I love it that\u00a0she\u2019s\u00a0got all those things, so I do think\u00a0there\u2019s\u00a0a lot to explore\u00a0there\u00a0and\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0very up for doing that.\u2019<\/p>\n That, of course, is if Mary isn\u2019t utterly destroyed by what comes next\u2026<\/p>\n Arrow Arrow Arrow
