It’s one of the biggest broadband providers in the UK, but Virgin Media<\/a> appears to be down today.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

According to DownDetector, problems started just after 10am BST on Monday and are affecting more than 800 users across the UK.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Of those who reported issues, 59 per cent were with their landline internet, 26 per cent with email and 22 per cent experiencing a ‘total blackout’.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Affected customers headed to X (Twitter<\/a>) to share their experiences, with one calling it an ‘absolute joke’.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Many complained that they’re unable to access the Sky Sports app before England cricket’s crucial match against India today<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

One posted: ‘Thanks to @virginmedia for making signing into the Sky Sports app impossible.\u00a0<\/p>\n

‘I’m guessing I wont be watching the last day of the Cricket today.’<\/p>\n

Another said: ‘Could we please tell @englandcricket to hold off beating India in the cricket until the Sky Sports app sorts itself out with Virgin Media logins!’\u00a0<\/p>\n

A third person posed: ‘Anyone else unable to sign in to watch Sky Sports on the app with a @virginmedia account or log into Virgin separately ?’\u00a0<\/p>\n

A fourth said: ‘Cmon @virginmedia sort it out!!!\u00a0Can’t login to virgin tv go or sky sports and the cricket starts in one minute! Absolute joke.’\u00a0<\/p>\n

Yet another said: ‘Congratulations Virgin Media Biggest cricket day of the year and I can\u2019t access Sky Cricket,’ adding that they’d ‘#cancelledsubscription’.\u00a0<\/p>\n

DownDetector gets network status updates from social media platforms, reports submitted to its website and other sources around the web.<\/p>\n

The service shows affected people all over the country, from London to Manchester, Liverpool, Nottingham, Cardiff and Edinburgh.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Virgin Media has acknowledged the problems users are encountering, but is yet to reveal a cause.\u00a0<\/p>\n

On X, the official Virgin Media account replied those affected: ‘We are aware of an issue at the moment and are hoping to resolve this as soon as possible.’\u00a0<\/p>\n

Another message said that ‘there is currently no estimated fix time for this’.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Many customers complained of not being able to log in to their Virgin Media account. The telco said it is ‘aware of an issue’\u00a0<\/p>\n

As part of a \u00a331 monthly package, customers can watch Sky Sports through their Virgin Media broadband subscription.\u00a0<\/p>\n

But currently Virgin Media login details are not allowing people to log in to the Sky Sports app, instead coming up with an error message.\u00a0<\/p>\n

People posted a screenshot of an error message they were seeing on their device, reading: ‘Apologies, we can’t load the page at the moment.’\u00a0<\/p>\n

Watching Sky Sports on the TV appears to be working as normal, but many may be relying on their laptop or phone to watch during working hours.\u00a0<\/p>\n

A Virgin Media O2 spokesperson told MailOnline: ‘Our fixed and mobile networks are operating as usual today, however we\u2019re aware that a small number of customers are experiencing issues accessing some apps.\u00a0<\/p>\n

‘Our technical teams are working to restore services as soon as possible and we apologise for any inconvenience caused.’\u00a0<\/p>\n

What causes a broadband outage?\u00a0 <\/p>\n

A broadband outage is a problem with your provider\u2019s network that causes you and others to lose internet connection.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Outages can happen on a small scale, like just in your own home, or it can be a wider issue affecting your entire neighborhood or region.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Causes include cyberattacks, equipment failure, or even big storms that damage infrastructure.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Another possible cause is human error – for example,\u00a0construction workers might accidentally cut through a cable while working on a road or building.\u00a0<\/p>\n

There are also cases of vandalism where someone intentionally damages internet infrastructure.\u00a0<\/p>\n

More local outages, concentrated on a specific neighbourhood, could be a fault with internal systems run by the provider, between the provider\u2019s broadband exchange and the cabinet on your street.<\/p>\n

Alternatively, there may be overwhelming internet traffic in the area that is slowing performance.\u00a0<\/p>\n
