{"id":300672,"date":"2025-12-05T15:52:10","date_gmt":"2025-12-05T15:52:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/300672\/"},"modified":"2025-12-05T15:52:10","modified_gmt":"2025-12-05T15:52:10","slug":"former-bury-pub-landlord-shares-struggles-with-mental-health","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/300672\/","title":{"rendered":"Former Bury pub landlord shares struggles with mental health"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n  The Bury man, who is only sharing his name as Greg, from Bury, reached breaking point after being robbed while working as a pub landlord.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  He said the trauma was something that stayed with him and he \u2018didn\u2019t know how to deal with it&#8217;.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Greg is now receiving support from the Bury Living Well Service, which brings together professionals from across health, social care, and the voluntary sector to deliver joined-up mental health support for adults with complex needs.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  He said: &#8220;I\u2019ve always been outgoing, but I learned early on to push things to the back of my mind.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  &#8220;That experience changed me. I didn\u2019t feel like the same person. The trauma stayed with me.&#8221;\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  In 2015, his wife died, leaving him to care for their young son while also managing his own grief.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The 54-year-old said: &#8220;There\u2019s not a day that goes by that I don\u2019t think about her, and I\u2019ll always love her.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  &#8220;I haven\u2019t had another relationship since, I\u2019ve just not felt ready.&#8221;\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  He has also struggled with chronic pain from a herniated disc, but said his priority is waiting until his son is older before considering surgery.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  His mental health deteriorated further after losing his job and driving licence due to a driving offence, and following an incident in which a neighbour threatened him with an axe.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Greg said: &#8220;I felt my life had fallen apart and I\u2019d lost everything.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cI lost my job and driving licence due to a driving offence.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  &#8220;Not long after, a neighbour came at me with an axe, completely unprovoked. It was frightening and pushed me over the edge.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  &#8220;I felt my life had fallen apart and I\u2019d lost everything.&#8221;\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Greg was referred to senior mental health practitioner Fiona Bailey by his GP.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <img   width=\"100%\"\/>Mental health practitioner Fiona Bailey (Image: Supplied)\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Ms Bailey said: &#8220;When I first met Greg, he was neglecting himself, completely despondent and at breaking point.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  &#8220;Over time, I saw a funny, upbeat, and resilient man emerge, who wasn&#8217;t prepared to give up.&#8221;\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Launched on October 1, 2024, the service has already received 7,556 referrals.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  READ MORE:\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  It is a partnership between Pennine Care NHS Foundation Trust, Bury Council, and organisations including Early Break, The Creative Living Centre, and BIG in Mental Health.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Greg said he now feels more positive about the future.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  He said:\u00a0\u00a0\u201cI feel more positive, but I still have ups and downs.
