Liz Truss<\/a> has returned to our screens with the launch of her very own talk show, marking a political comeback just over three years after her record-breaking 49 days as Prime Minister.<\/p>\n Truss opens the series by warning of what she and her guests describe as national decline, focusing on the economy, immigration<\/a>, public services, and national identity<\/a>. <\/p>\n \u201cThis show is going to lift the lid on what is really going on,\u201d she says, promising viewers an unvarnished account of \u201cexactly how bad it is.\u201d<\/p>\n Future episodes, she adds, will explore those responsible for Britain\u2019s alleged decline, while also offering \u201coptimism and hope\u201d about the country\u2019s future. Truss says the programme will feature first-hand accounts from what she calls \u201cwitnesses to the fall of Britain.\u201d<\/p>\n She suggests that optimism may be rooted in political movements elsewhere, pointing specifically to the \u201cTrump revolution\u201d in the US and discussing the potential for similar ideas to influence UK politics. <\/p>\n Episode one, titled London is Falling, sets the stage for the series\u2019 mix of critique, debate, and proposed solutions. <\/p>\n Here are the key takeaways so far. <\/p>\n Britain is portrayed as being in national decline<\/p>\n Truss and her guests repeatedly portray the UK as facing severe economic and social decline. <\/p>\n The episode highlights economic stagnation, struggling town centres, struggling independent businesses, pressures on public services and policing, and even instances of people attempting at-home dental procedures because they cannot get appointments. <\/p>\n \u201cYou\u2019d have to be watching the fake news BBC or living on Elon Musk\u2019s Mars mission to not know Britain is going to hell in a handcart,\u201d Truss declares as she opens the show.<\/p>\n She and her guests go on to explore what they see as the causes of this decline and how they might be addressed.<\/p>\n The issue of the \u2018ruling elite\u2019<\/p>\n Truss and her first guest, British conservative political commentator, Matt Goodwin, argue that Britain\u2019s problems are driven by a \u201cnew ruling elite\u201d that dominates major institutions.<\/p>\n Goodwin contrasts this with what he describes as an older British elite, which he characterises as \u201ccustodians of the nation\u201d.<\/p>\n He claims the new elite is driven by what he calls \u201csuicidal empathy\u201d, extending compassion, tolerance, and diversity \u201cat the expense of the country\u201d.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s a very morally righteous framework,\u201d he tells Truss, \u201cand one that, ultimately, I think is destroying our country.\u201d<\/p>\n Liz Truss echoes this theme, accusing parts of the political class of what she calls \u201cself-loathing\u201d and a growing reluctance to be associated with Britain.<\/p>\n Their conversation then turns to Conservatism and how it has changed over time, while Goodwin notes how politics has become more polarised in recent years.<\/p>\n A major focus of the episode is immigration.
