Millions of state pensioners lost their \u00a3300 Winter Fuel Payment last winter, as has been well publicised since the Government announced the benefit would become means-tested. This meant that the vast majority of state pensioners could no longer get a winter fuel allowance payment unless they claimed the right benefits.<\/p>\n
Since then, Sir Keir Starmer<\/a> announced a partial u-turn over the benefit, returning the \u00a3200 or \u00a3300 payment to every state pensioner and taking it back from pensioners in tax<\/a> if they earn more than \u00a335,000 per year. This means every state pensioner will be paid the money, and only those earning \u00a335,000 or more in a year will have to give it back to HMRC<\/a> in tax.<\/p>\n But what many don\u2019t realise is that if you do keep your Winter Fuel Payment<\/a> this winter, the exact amount you get paid changes depending on the year you were born and possibly because of other circumstances.<\/p>\n The Winter Fuel Payment<\/a> will once again be automatically paid to all state pensioners in 2025, but the amount changes depending on your age.<\/p>\n Those who are of state pension<\/a> age but aged under 80, so born on or before September 21, 1959, will get a \u00a3200 payment, whereas those aged over 80 – so born on September 21, 1944 or earlier – will get an instant \u00a3100 increase, giving them a \u00a3300 payment instead.<\/p>\n The amount you get is based on when you were born and what your circumstances were between September 15 and 21, 2025. This is called the \u2018qualifying week\u2019.<\/p>\n This means that if you are now aged over 80 and qualify, your Winter Fuel Payment will be increased from \u00a3200 to \u00a3300.<\/p>\n Most people who qualify will get a letter telling them how much they will get and which bank account this will be paid into – which is usually the same as for your Pension Credit or other benefits.<\/p>\n Age UK said: \u201cPayments are automatic you do not need to do anything. If you have not received your Winter Fuel Payment by January 2026, you can make a claim before 31 March 2026.
