Kristen Stewart is weighing in on the Method acting debate.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Chronology of Water\u201d director recently told the New York Times<\/a> that acting is by nature \u201cquite embarrassing and unmasculine,\u201d and that going Method is a way for some male actors to temper the \u201cinherently vulnerable\u201d side of being a performer.<\/p>\n More from Variety<\/p>\n \u201cPerformance is inherently vulnerable and therefore quite embarrassing and unmasculine,\u201d Stewart said. \u201cThere\u2019s no bravado in suggesting that you\u2019re a mouthpiece for someone else\u2019s ideas. It\u2019s inherently submissive. Have you ever heard of a female actor that was method?\u201d<\/p>\n The comment was part of a larger conversation about Marlon Brando\u2019s famous mispronunciation of \u201cKrpton\u201d in 1978\u2019s \u201cSuperman.\u201d The interviewer recalled Sean Penn, who knew Bradno, saying it was his way of maintaining integrity while appearing in a \u201csellout movie.\u201d Stewart said that men in Hollywood are often \u201caggrandized for retaining self\u201d while women don\u2019t get the same treatment.<\/p>\n \u201cBrando sounds like a hero, doesn\u2019t he? If a woman did that, it would be different,\u201d she said. \u201cIf you have to do 50 push-ups before your close-up or refuse to say a word a certain way \u2014 I mean, Brando, [expletive], I\u2019m not coming for him.\u201d<\/p>\n She contiuned. \u201cThere\u2019s a common act that happens before the acting happens on set: If they can protrude out of the vulnerability and feel like a gorilla pounding their chest before they cry on camera, it\u2019s a little less embarrassing.
