\n\tNo good deed goes unpunished, especially in awards season.<\/p>\n

\n\tCynthia Erivo<\/a> has made Golden Globes<\/a> history, becoming the first Black woman nominated twice in the lead actress (comedy or musical) category. The recognition comes for her towering performance as Elphaba in Jon M. Chu\u2019s box office smash \u201cWicked: For Good<\/a>,\u201d marking her second nomination in the category following her nod for \u201cWicked\u201d just last year.<\/p>\n

\n\tThis year, Erivo was nominated alongside<\/a> Rose Byrne (\u201cIf I Had Legs I\u2019d Kick You\u201d), Kate Hudson (\u201cSong Sung Blue\u201d), Chase Infiniti (\u201cOne Battle After Another\u201d), Amanda Seyfried (\u201cThe Testament of Ann Lee\u201d) and Emma Stone (\u201cBugonia\u201d).<\/p>\n

\n\tThe milestone arrives within a category that has long seen limited representation for Black women. Before Erivo\u2019s second nomination, only 12 Black women had been nominated in the Globes\u2019 comedy actress race since its inception, with just one winner to date \u2014 Angela Bassett, who took home the prize in 1994 for her portrayal of Tina Turner in \u201cWhat\u2019s Love Got to Do With It.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tLast year was the first time more than one Black woman was nominated in the category, with Erivo and Zendaya from the sports film \u201cChallengers.\u201d Demi Moore eventually won the category for her work in \u201cThe Substance.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tOf the 13 performances recognized in the category, three have gone on to earn Academy Award nominations: Carroll for \u201cClaudine,\u201d Bassett for \u201cWhat\u2019s Love Got to Do With It\u201d and Erivo for \u201cWicked.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe nomination comes following her shocking snub at the Critics Choice Awards<\/a> for her work in the sequel. Despite the strong showing for \u201cWicked: For Good,\u201d which earned seven nominations, including best picture, supporting actress for Ariana Grande and key craft races, Erivo was left off a lineup.<\/p>\n

\n\tErivo\u2019s breakthrough continues a banner awards-season run for \u201cWicked: For Good,\u201d which has performed strongly across Globes categories, including best picture (comedy or musical). Her nomination also displays a growing, but still overdue, recognition of Black women in lead comedic roles.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe Golden Globes are set for Jan. 11.<\/p>\n
