His current contract had been set to expire in May 2026.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Kimmel and Disney agreed on the extension several months ago but delayed announcing their plans out of respect for fellow late-night host Stephen Colbert, according to Bloomberg.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">This summer, CBS <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/tv-and-radio\/2025\/jul\/18\/the-late-show-with-stephen-colbert-to-end-in-2026-as-cbs-cancels-show\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">announced<\/a> that The Late Show with Stephen Colbert had been cancelled and would end in May 2026.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The news of Kimmel\u2019s renewal on Monday comes several months after Kimmel\u2019s show was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/tv-and-radio\/2025\/sep\/18\/jimmy-kimmel-live-suspended-indefinitely-after-hosts-charlie-kirk-comments\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">briefly suspended<\/a> by ABC in September under pressure from two of the network\u2019s biggest affiliate partners, Nexstar and Sinclair, as well as the Federal Communications Commission. Kimmel had made comments related to the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, specifically <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/culture\/2025\/sep\/17\/jimmy-kimmel-republicans-charlie-kirk\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">accusing Donald Trump\u2019s political movement of exploiting Kirk\u2019s killing<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">His suspension drew <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/tv-and-radio\/2025\/sep\/18\/jimmy-kimmel-suspension-sparks-shock-fears-for-free-speech-censoring-realtime\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">widespread outrage<\/a> and ignited a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/tv-and-radio\/2025\/sep\/18\/jimmy-kimmel-suspension-sparks-shock-fears-for-free-speech-censoring-realtime\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">national debate over free speech<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The US-based free speech advocate group the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/tv-and-radio\/2025\/sep\/18\/jimmy-kimmel-live-suspended-indefinitely-after-hosts-charlie-kirk-comments\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">said at the time<\/a> of the suspension that it was an example of another media outlet that had \u201cwithered under government pressure, ensuring that the administration will continue to extort and exact retribution on broadcasters and publishers who criticize it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe cannot be a country where late night talk show hosts serve at the pleasure of the president.
