Trump called for Ukraine\u2019s president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, to accept his proposal to cede territory to Russia, arguing that Moscow retained the \u201cupper hand\u201d and that Zelenskyy\u2019s government must \u201cplay ball\u201d.<\/p>\n
In his often halting remarks, Trump swerved from subject to subject while rehearsing familiar grudges and conspiracies. He also declined repeatedly to rule out sending American troops into Venezuela as part of his effort to bring down President Nicol\u00e1s Maduro<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cI don\u2019t want to rule in or out. I don\u2019t talk about it,\u201d Trump said, adding he did not want to talk about military strategy.<\/p>\n The US president returned repeatedly describing what he said were Europe\u2019s problems in entirely racial terms, calling some unnamed European leaders \u201creal stupid\u201d.<\/p>\n \u201cIf it keeps going the way it\u2019s going, Europe will not be \u2026 in my opinion \u2026 many of those countries will not be viable countries any longer. Their immigration policy is a disaster. What they\u2019re doing with immigration is a disaster. We had a disaster coming, but I was able to stop it.\u201d<\/p>\n The interview followed the release last week of a new US national security strategy<\/a> that claimed Europe faced \u201ccivilisational erasure\u201d<\/a> because of mass migration and offered tacit support for far-right parties.<\/p>\n On Monda,y Ant\u00f3nio Costa, the president of the European Council, said the signal that Washington would back Europe\u2019s nationalist parties was unacceptable, adding: \u201cWhat we cannot accept is the threat to interfere in European politics.\u201d<\/p>\n Commenting on changes he said were occurring in big European cities such as London and Paris, Trump made clear that the problem as he viewed it was that they were becoming less white. He again singled out for criticism Sadiq Khan, London\u2019s first Muslim mayor.<\/p>\n \u201cAnd Europe is \u2026 if you take a look at Paris, it\u2019s a much different place. I loved Paris. It\u2019s a much different place than it was. If you take a look at London, you have a mayor named Khan.<\/p>\n \u201cHe\u2019s a horrible mayor. He\u2019s an incompetent mayor, but he\u2019s a horrible, vicious, disgusting mayor. I think he\u2019s done a terrible job. London\u2019s a different place. I love London. I love London. And I hate to see it happen. You know, my roots are in Europe, as you know.\u201c<\/p>\n [In] Europe, they\u2019re coming in from all parts of the world. Not just the Middle East, they\u2019re coming in from the Congo, tremendous numbers of people coming from the Congo. And even worse, they\u2019re coming from prisons of the Congo and many other countries.\u201d<\/p>\n Asked if the trajectory of European countries meant they would no longer be US allies, Trump replied: \u201cOr they\u2019ll be \u2026 well, it depends. You know, it depends. They\u2019ll change their ideology, obviously, because the people coming in have a totally different ideology. But it\u2019s gonna make them much weaker. They\u2019ll be a much … they\u2019ll be much weaker, and they\u2019ll be much different.\u201d<\/p>\n While he denied he had a specific vision for Europe, Trump agreed he had \u201cendorsed people that a lot of Europeans don\u2019t like\u201d, including Hungary\u2019s Viktor Orb\u00e1n.<\/p>\n \u201cI have no vision for Europe. All I want to see is a strong Europe. Look, I have a vision for the United States of America first. It\u2019s \u201cMake America Great Again,\u201d he said, adding: \u201cI\u2019m supposed to be a very smart person, I can \u2026 I have eyes. I have ears. I have knowledge. I have vast knowledge. I see what\u2019s happening. I get reports that you will never see.
