<\/p>\nThe BBC has officially announced that Shetland will be returning for an eleventh series in 2026.<\/p>\n
The confirmation arrived via a voiceover as the credits rolled on tonight’s series 10 finale.<\/p>\n
Wednesday evening\u2019s concluding episode brought the murder investigation of retired social worker Eadie Tulloch to its dramatic end.<\/p>\n
Detectives DI Ruth Calder (Ashley Jensen) and DI Tosh McIntosh (Alison O\u2019Donnell) finally cracked the case after six episodes of twists and slow-burning tension.<\/p>\n

Tulloch, portrayed by Maria MacDonnell, had been discovered dead outside her home in the remote hamlet of Lunniswick, left exposed to the elements for several days before a neighbour found her while delivering food.<\/p>\n
Viewer reaction on social media proved sharply divided following the reveal, with many left frustrated by the conclusion.<\/p>\n
One viewer on X branded the finale \u201cridiculous”, while another said the investigation had gone \u201call around the houses for the obvious answer all along”.<\/p>\n
Others described the episode as \u201cweak,\u201d criticising the dialogue, score and tone as too \u201cdark”.<\/p>\n

Some questioned the production itself: \u201cIs the picture very dim or is it my tv? #Shetland”, one viewer asked. <\/p>\n
But the reaction was not universally negative. Some viewers praised the series, with one writing: \u201cGood series. I wonder if this will be the last one.”<\/p>\n

Despite tonight\u2019s news, the show’s leading actresses had previously suggested they were unaware of any plans for another series.<\/p>\n
Speaking to Radio Times, Ms Jensen admitted she had \u201cno idea\u201d whether the drama would return, while Ms O\u2019Donnell said they couldn\u2019t \u201creveal\u201d anything.<\/p>\n
Ms Jensen added that she and her co-star were the \u201cwrong people for any of these questions,\u201d saying: \u201cI have no idea, and I expect nothing\u2026 You\u2019ve got to just live in the moment and be present and not worry\u2026 if there\u2019s going to be season 11.\u201d<\/p>\n
Throughout the six-part investigation, viewers watched Calder and Tosh uncover hidden money, buried secrets and a trail of drug-related issues linked to Tulloch\u2019s former career.<\/p>\n
Suspicion fell repeatedly on residents across the tight-knit Lunniswick community, with her estranged son Ed Tulloch (Stuart Townsend) emerging as an early suspect.<\/p>\n

Broadcast Now reported that the latest series had a \u201cstrong launch,\u201d though consolidated figures have not yet been released.<\/p>\n
