{"id":311666,"date":"2025-12-12T08:03:07","date_gmt":"2025-12-12T08:03:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/311666\/"},"modified":"2025-12-12T08:03:07","modified_gmt":"2025-12-12T08:03:07","slug":"new-laws-to-be-considered-after-harrowing-stories-from-ex-vodafone-franchisees-vodafone","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/311666\/","title":{"rendered":"New laws to be considered after \u2018harrowing stories\u2019 from ex-Vodafone franchisees | Vodafone"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The government will consider new laws to correct the power imbalance in franchise agreements in response to the \u201charrowing stories\u201d of small business people running <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/vodafonegroup\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Vodafone<\/a> stores.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The move follows allegations of suicide and attempted suicide among shopkeepers who had agreed to deals to run retail outlets for the \u00a318bn telecoms company, which were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2025\/dec\/08\/ex-vodafone-franchisees-mental-health\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">revealed by the Guardian on Monday<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">During Thursday\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/justinmadders\/status\/1999075539051766111?s=48&amp;t=oopC_Ly7H2iCZG8yOYmU2Q\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow\">business questions in the Commons<\/a>, Justin Madders, a former minister, said: \u201cI\u2019m sure the department will have been aware of the coverage this week of some of the harrowing stories of the treatment of Vodafone franchisees \u2026 [The department] will no doubt recognise the power imbalance in that relationship and will they consider looking at some measures to redress that imbalance perhaps by a statutory code of practice or a national arbitration system?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Chris Bryant, a minister of state at the Department for Business and Trade, said: \u201cI am happy to sit down with him and discuss whether there are specific proposals that we could bring forward which would address that issue of imbalance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Outside the chamber another former business minister, Labour\u2019s Gareth Thomas, added: \u201cThis case continues to raise disturbing echoes of the Post Office scandal and raises the question as to whether the law around franchising needs to be toughened up to ensure small-business owners are better protected.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">On Monday, the Guardian revealed allegations that Adrian Howe, a former Vodafone employee who had agreed to become a franchisee in 2018, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2025\/dec\/08\/ex-vodafone-franchisees-mental-health\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">had taken his own life<\/a> after becoming convinced his deal with the multinational company would prove financially disastrous.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Rachael Beddow-Davison and Dan Attwal also told the Guardian about how commission cuts by Vodafone in 2020 caused their franchising companies to run up huge debts, which they each said contributed to them attempting to kill themselves.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">A group of 62 former Vodafone franchisees brought <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2024\/dec\/10\/vodafone-store-managers-debts-franchise-operators-legal-claim\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a high court claim<\/a> in 2024, alleging the telecoms company \u201cunjustly enriched\u201d itself by slashing sales commissions paid to the small business owners for running the stores in 2020.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In September, Vodafone commenced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2025\/sep\/10\/vodafone-inquiry-franchising-division-lawsuit-francisees\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">offering financial settlements<\/a> to a selection of former franchisees who are outside the group of claimants currently suing the business \u2013 as it launched its fourth investigation into the historical conduct within its franchising division.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Vodafone says the ongoing legal claim is a \u201ccommercial dispute\u201d but has previously apologised to claimants who blamed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2024\/dec\/10\/vodafone-store-operators-commission-cuts-franchisees\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">pressure from the telecoms group for triggering suicidal thoughts<\/a>. A survey of franchisees during September 2020 resulted in 78 out of 119 respondents leaving <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2025\/sep\/22\/vodafone-franchisees-warned-of-massive-impact-of-commission-cuts-on-mental-health\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">overwhelmingly critical comments about the effects Vodafone\u2019s actions<\/a> had had on their mental health.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In response to the Guardian\u2019s investigation, a Vodafone UK spokesperson said: \u201cWhile we are sorry if any partners have had a difficult experience, we reject any suggestion that our franchisees were put under undue pressure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWe continue to run a successful franchise operation, and many of our existing franchisees have expanded their business with us by taking on additional stores.
