{"id":31383,"date":"2025-07-29T15:50:10","date_gmt":"2025-07-29T15:50:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/31383\/"},"modified":"2025-07-29T15:50:10","modified_gmt":"2025-07-29T15:50:10","slug":"eddie-jones-backs-out-of-favour-wallaby-superstar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/31383\/","title":{"rendered":"Eddie Jones backs out of favour Wallaby superstar"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Former Wallabies head coach Eddie Jones has thrown his support behind out-of-favour prop <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rugbypass.com\/players\/taniela-tupou\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Taniela Tupou<\/a>, insisting the powerhouse front-rower should start for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rugbypass.com\/teams\/australia\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Australia<\/a> to give them a crucial early edge in the third Test against the Lions.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rugbypass.com\/teams\/lions\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Lions<\/a> have already won the series, but the Wallabies will be eager to avoid a whitewash in Sydney against the touring side after doing everything but win in the second Test in Melbourne.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking on the Rugby Unity podcast with David Pembroke and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rugbypass.com\/players\/ewen-mckenzie\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ewen McKenzie<\/a>, the 65-year-old singled out Tupou as a game-breaker the Wallabies cannot afford to leave out of contention \u2013 or even on the bench.<\/p>\n<p>Tupou, who is in a run of mediocre form in Super Rugby and headed to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rugbypass.com\/teams\/racing-92\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Racing 92<\/a> in France, hasn\u2019t featured for the Wallabies against the Lions but has played them twice on tour for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rugbypass.com\/teams\/waratahs\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Waratahs<\/a> and the First Nations &amp; Pasifika XV.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019d definitely start with him,\u201d Jones said. \u201cHe gives you something extra at the start of the game, and from Australia\u2019s point of view, they have to get into the game early. The 21-year-old impressed Jones during his brief stint with the national side, including the first two Tests against the Lions, where he looked dangerous when the Wallabies were able to get him the ball.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019d also be inclined to play Suaalii,\u201d Jones added. \u201cI reckon they missed a couple of opportunities to get him one-on-one with Bundee Aki.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the end of the game, they had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rugbypass.com\/players\/owen-farrell\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Owen Farrell<\/a> at 13 and Bundee at 12, and there was a lineout around the 45-metre mark in that situation. They need to try to get Suaalii into those one-on-one contests early, with early ball.
