Do they realize that nearly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/news-events\/press-announcements\/hhs-fda-and-usda-address-health-risks-ultra-processed-foods\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">70% of the food<\/a> available to purchase for their families is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/02\/28\/health\/ultraprocessed-food-health-risks-study-wellness\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ultraprocessed<\/a>? And if they did, would they know how to avoid those foods?\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1lllde000k3b6nxmpsncs5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            I\u2019ve been trying to answer that question for more than two years now, as part of my beat for the CNN Wellness team. Not only does my team report on the latest lifestyle news, we also provide expert-vetted guidance on how to improve your health \u2014  we like to say it\u2019s \u201cnews you can use.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1lllde000l3b6nox73futj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Yet after reading countless studies, talking to dozens of experts and exploring all sorts of trendy apps, I still can\u2019t help you reliably avoid ultraprocessed foods, also known as UPFs.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1lllde000m3b6n5fwlwser@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Come with me to the snack aisle, and I\u2019ll explain why.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1lllde000n3b6nhcwyhjsd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            As I pass by all the colorfully packaged candies, cookies and chips, my stomach starts to rumble with anticipation. Typically made of refined grains and overflowing with sugar, salt and fat, these products \u2014 which we used to call \u201cjunk foods\u201d \u2014 are calorie-laden, nutritionally bad for us, and deliciously addictive.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1lllde000o3b6ndbetrfr8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The appeal of junk food hasn\u2019t changed \u2014 in fact, experts say it\u2019s only gotten worse as the food industry <a href=\"https:\/\/stateofchildhoodobesity.org\/sugary-drinks-and-tobacco-different-industries-same-playbook\/#:~:text=According%20to%20Kelly%20Brownell%2C%20PhD%2C%20and%20Matthew,tobacco%20and%20food%20industries%20have%20decades%2Dlong%20connections.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">refined its algorithms<\/a> to target our \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2019\/03\/19\/health\/bliss-point-addictive-food\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">bliss point\u201d<\/a> \u2014 creating the absolute <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC6550161\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">yummiest combinations<\/a> of sugar, salt and fat to make it nearly impossible to \u201ceat just one.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1lllde000p3b6nyhlsw0xq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Today, many of those same junk foods \u2014 as well as the majority of other ultraprocessed foods such as ready-to-eat meals, processed meats, instant and boxed mixes, breakfast cereals, and more \u2014 contain newly created synthetic favors, textures, dyes and preservatives.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1lllde000q3b6n7p1c5xnf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In fact, today\u2019s preservatives can keep foods looking fresh and tasty for days and weeks, even years \u2014 much longer shelf lives than in your great granny\u2019s day.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1lllde000r3b6n0uuqis7u@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            There\u2019s no doubt that the safety and convenience of such long-lasting, affordable foods has been life-changing. Today, we can make meals from our cabinets without stopping by the store for fresh ingredients or stirring sauce for hours over the stove. We have more of our precious time to spend on other pursuits.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1lllde000s3b6nh4ztevfm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Yet it\u2019s those preservatives and other additives, however, that can make a food ultraprocessed, according to the food classification system <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC10261019\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">NOVA,<\/a> the most widely used definition of UPFs to date.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1lllde000t3b6nsa4ljt63@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            NOVA was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/core\/journals\/public-health-nutrition\/article\/nutrition-and-health-the-issue-is-not-food-nor-nutrients-so-muchas-processing\/0C514FC9DB264538F83D5D34A81BB10A\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">created in 2009<\/a> by Brazilian nutritionist Carlos Augusto Monteiro, who coined the term \u201cultraprocessed.\u201d Monteiro is an emeritus professor of nutrition and public health in the School of Public Health at Brazil\u2019s University of S\u00e3o Paulo.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1lllde000u3b6nzwm5vwr7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            NOVA splits food into four categories. First are  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/08\/04\/health\/weight-loss-ultraprocessed-food-wellness\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">minimally processed<\/a> foods \u2014 whole foods which we may slightly \u201cprocess\u201d by cutting (slicing up an orange or apple) and cooking (saut\u00e9ing vegetables). The second group includes processed culinary items used to prepare, season and cook whole foods \u2014 think spices, herbs and oils. Group three consists of processed foods that combine groups one and two \u2014 canned or bottled veggies and fruits, salted nuts, and unpackaged, freshly baked breads are examples.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1lllde000v3b6n3uo2dcp1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Group four are ultraprocessed foods \u2014 which now make up to 53% of an American adult\u2019s diet and 62% of foods eaten by an American child, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/08\/07\/health\/ultraprocessed-food-calories-average-diet-wellness\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a recent report<\/a> by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1lllde000w3b6nrtd92o9y@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            According to Monteiro, the products in group four contain little to no whole food. Instead, they are manufactured from \u201cchemically manipulated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/384\/bmj.q439\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">cheap ingredients<\/a>\u201d and often use synthetic additives to make them \u201cedible, palatable and habit-forming.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/cnn-ultraprocessed-02-0238-copy.jpg\" alt=\"Some canned pastas, often marketed for children, may contain high fructose corn syrup or other added sugars, chemical additives and colorings.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"2500\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1lllde000x3b6ngzi7wfre@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Additives often used in ultraprocessed foods include preservatives to resist mold and bacteria; emulsifiers to keep incompatible ingredients from separating; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/01\/17\/health\/red-40-food-dyes-wellness\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">artificial colorings<\/a>; fragrance and flavor enhancers; and anti-foaming, bulking, bleaching, gelling and glazing agents.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1lllde000y3b6n26gf0jtk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cNo reason exists to believe that humans can fully adapt to these products,\u201d Monteiro  cowrote in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/384\/bmj.q439\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">2024 editorial in the journal The BMJ<\/a>. \u201cThe body may react to them as useless or harmful, so its systems may become impaired or damaged, depending on their vulnerability and the amount of ultra-processed food consumed.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1lllde000z3b6na9kq87tw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The stakes are high: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/04\/28\/health\/ultraprocessed-food-death-wellness\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Studies<\/a> have shown that eating just 10% more calories a day from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/11\/22\/health\/ultraprocessed-food-cancer-wellness\/index.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ultraprocessed food<\/a> \u2014 that\u2019s about one serving \u2014 may be associated with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/02\/28\/health\/ultraprocessed-food-health-risks-study-wellness\/index.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">50% higher risk<\/a> of cardiovascular disease-related death. There is also a 55% greater chance of obesity and a 40% higher probability of developing type 2 diabetes. The risk of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/05\/22\/health\/ultraprocessed-food-stroke-cognitive-decline-wellness\/index.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">cognitive decline and stroke<\/a> also rises, as does the chance of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/11\/22\/health\/ultraprocessed-food-cancer-wellness\/index.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">developing cancers<\/a> of the upper digestive tract.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1lllde00103b6n7qad1tso@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            However, the Consumer Brands Association, which represents major food manufacturers, told me in an email \u201cthere is currently no agreed upon scientific definition of ultra-processed foods.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1lllde00113b6nsomxpp2h@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cAttempting to classify foods as unhealthy simply because they are processed, or demonizing food by ignoring its full nutrient content, misleads consumers and exacerbates health disparities,\u201d said Sarah Gallo, CBA\u2019s senior vice president of product policy. \u201cAmericans deserve facts based on sound science in order to make the best choices for their health.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1lllde00123b6n4nyo6y4r@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In addition, she said, food and beverage manufacturers have long invested in product labeling, \u201cso that consumers can review product ingredients and nutrition information and make decisions best for them.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1lllde00133b6njujkc39t@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            To manufacture cheap, delicious food that is packaged for convenience, experts say basic food crops such as potatoes, corn, wheat and soybeans may be disassembled into their molecular parts \u2014 starchy flours, protein isolates, fats and oils \u2014 to create what manufacturers call \u201cslurries.\u201d (How do they do it?  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=BsKsrCGfxLY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Watch this video.<\/a>)\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1lllde00143b6nbub2x0tb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The cell walls of the plants are destroyed, dispersing micronutrients that often need to work together to nurture our bodies. Insoluble <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2019\/01\/10\/health\/high-fiber-diet-weight-loss-mortality-study-intl\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">plant fiber<\/a> we need to be healthy may also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cspi.org\/article\/high-fiber-foods-ultra-processed-pretenders-what-know\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">be lost<\/a>. What\u2019s left is a substance some scientists call \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/02\/01\/health\/predigested-food-wellness\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">predigested<\/a>\u201d \u2014 not unlike the regurgitated food a mama bird feeds her babies.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1lllde00153b6nzr7utecv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Barry Popkin, the W.R. Kenan Jr. Distinguished Professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill\u2019s Gillings School of Global Public Health, has seen the process firsthand.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1lllde00163b6nt3px83m2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIn the early 2000s, I went into some food plants and I saw the stuff \u2014 it was supposed to be granola bars, shredded wheat cereal,\u201d Popkin said. \u201cIt was colorless, odorless. I scooped some up in a spoon and tried to taste it \u2014 it was like sawdust or something.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1lllde00173b6n4q1rdmkd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Here\u2019s why eating \u201cpredigested\u201d food can be a problem: When we eat whole foods as our bodies are meant to do, we absorb micronutrients throughout the entire digestive process. If they are exploded into smithereens in an ultraprocessed food, do we still have access to them? If we do, are they absorbed by the body in the ways nature meant them to be?\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1lllde00183b6n3tsoljqg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            I\u2019m not aware of any studies that answer that question, although research is underway. But according to some food scientists I\u2019ve spoken to, it doesn\u2019t matter \u2014 manufacturers just add back missing vitamins, fiber and protein during manufacturing and voil\u00e0! It\u2019s as good as new.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1lllde00193b6nleu4wng0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Or is it? Is a patched-up Humpty Dumpty really the same Dumpty that fell off the wall?\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1lllde001a3b6nyn1c2bhr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Let\u2019s get back to the slurries: Next, with the help of artificial colorings, flavorings, texturizers and glue-like emulsifiers, ingredients are mixed, heated, pounded, shaped or extruded into any food a manufacturer can dream up.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1lllde001b3b6njp8au3qt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt\u2019s an illusion of food,\u201d Dr. Chris van Tulleken told me <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/02\/01\/health\/predigested-food-wellness\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">last year.<\/a>  He is a BBC contributor and professor of infection and global health at University College London.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1lllde001c3b6n7n0sshmb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt\u2019s really expensive and difficult for a food company to make food that is real and whole, and much cheaper for food companies to destroy real foods, turn them into molecules, and then reassemble those to make anything they want,\u201d said van Tulleken, author of the 2023 book \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Ultra-Processed-People-Cant-Stop-Eating\/dp\/1324076267\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Ultra-Processed People<\/a>: Why Do We All Eat Stuff That Isn\u2019t Food \u2026 and Why Can\u2019t We Stop?\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1lllde001d3b6nbb42n16l@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            I\u2019m still wandering around the snack aisle, so let\u2019s put our knowledge to the test by looking at one of my kids\u2019 old favorites \u2014 ranch-flavored veggie straws. As a conscientious mom, I always reached for the organic version.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1lllde001e3b6ny3pe1vsh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Of the more than 30 ingredients, three are additives: sodium caseinate, used as an emulsifier; calcium chloride, which extends shelf life; and potassium chloride, a flavor enhancer used to treat low blood pressure and low potassium levels.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1lllde001f3b6n28jra10y@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            All are designated GRAS (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/10\/03\/health\/food-supply-safety-loopholes-wellness\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">generally regarded as safe<\/a>) for use in food by the US Food and Drug Administration. Yet by NOVA\u2019s standards, those veggie straws are definitely ultraprocessed.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/cnn-ultraprocessed-06-0600-copy.jpg\" alt=\"Vegetable straws are considered ultraprocessed due to ingredients that include additives and powdered ingredients that do not resemble whole food.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"2500\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1lllde001g3b6njp87d70s@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Let\u2019s look at the nutrition label. The top ingredient is potato starch, followed by potato powder. Then come various oils, dehydrated vegetable powders (such as bell peppers, carrots, spinach), turmeric and beetroot powders (for color), and dried milk products (for the ranch taste). There are some vitamins and minerals. Oh, and salt and sugar, of course.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1lllde001h3b6n6rtu9zzv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            None of that sounds dangerous, but all those powders? That\u2019s a red flag that these kid-friendly straws may not have been made from my \u201cMom\u201d vision of saut\u00e9ed veggies pureed in a blender, poured into a mold and baked until puffy. Instead, it\u2019s possible they were created from a potato-based sludge, colored and flavored with vegetable powders, and enriched with vitamins before being squeezed through a tube and baked.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1lllde001i3b6ni71kk8i7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            That\u2019s something scientists can\u2019t determine. In fact, none of us can, because how these foods are made is proprietary to each manufacturer, which closely guards recipes and \u201cbliss point\u201d algorithms from competitors and the public.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1lllde001j3b6ngw2fnsb4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            I tried to obtain access to a major food company\u2019s production site on several occasions to understand how potato chips and other foods are made. Six months later, I gave up.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1lllde001k3b6ns8ged0rc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cFood companies today, they\u2019ve closed off their processing plants,\u201d Popkin said. \u201cSo we\u2019ve never been able to have a clinical study studying what happens if you eat real corn versus deconstructed corn.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1lllde001l3b6n5n36zzj7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But wait \u2014 I buy organic versions of the veggie straws, doesn\u2019t that help? Unfortunately, no. Buying organic does reduce pesticide levels, but that\u2019s not part of ultraprocessing. Turning even an organic vegetable into refined flakes and powders may destroy the plant\u2019s food matrix \u2014 cell walls that hold nutrients \u2014 and like our Humpty Dumpty, that food must be put back together again.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/cnn-ultraprocessed-04-0485-copy.jpg\" alt=\"Frozen chicken nuggets, along with cold cuts, sausages, hot dogs and other formed meats may contain \u201cmeat glue.\u201d\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"2500\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1lllde001m3b6nbjbp60vq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Many experts have tried to simplify the chore of avoiding ultraprocessing by advising consumers to choose foods with no more than five ingredients or avoid foods with ingredients you can\u2019t pronounce or can\u2019t find at home.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1lllde001n3b6n2tgqodqq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Those are great suggestions if you have time to read labels. It\u2019s also not a complete solution. Let\u2019s look at my favorite potato chip, which only has three ingredients on the label: potatoes, salt and oil. Does that mean this potato chip is now good for me? Or is it still a junk food even though it isn\u2019t ultraprocessed by the NOVA definition?\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1lllde001o3b6nikvrvi5a@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Those convenient, kid-friendly frozen chicken nuggets are easy to identify as ultraprocessed. And here\u2019s a startling fact: Nuggets typically contain <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC8537092\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">transglutaminase,<\/a> which the industry calls \u201cmeat glue.\u201d It\u2019s an enzyme that helps combine parts of an animal or different animals into one product \u2014 hot dogs, sausages and deli meats are common examples. (Hint: If the food packaging reads \u201cformed\u201d or \u201creformed,\u201d it likely contains transglutaminase.)\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1lllde001p3b6nzqngyr8e@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Transglutaminase isn\u2019t easy to pronounce, and it\u2019s not an ingredient you\u2019ll have at home. Yet the <a href=\"https:\/\/ific.org\/resources\/articles\/what-is-transglutaminase\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">FDA<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/ask.usda.gov\/s\/article\/Is-Transglutaminase-Enzyme-TG-Enzyme-Safe#:~:text=Yes%2C%20Transglutaminase%20Enzyme%20(TG%20enzyme,products%20for%20over%2010%20years.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">US Department of Agriculture<\/a> have no problem with it because it dissipates when cooked.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1lllde001q3b6nhntxbie0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            This next challenge is harder: Are most breads on grocery store shelves ultraprocessed by NOVA standards? Unless it\u2019s freshly baked from scratch, the answer is \u201cmost likely,\u201d although experts disagree.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1lllde001r3b6njw5rlwzm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            From the NOVA perspective, if a bread lasts longer than a week or so without mold, it may have a synthetic preservative in it. Common additives in bread include calcium propionate, an artificial preservative linked to <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/12173999\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">behavior problems in children<\/a>;  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foodchemadditives.com\/side_effects_info\/781#:~:text=General%20Side%20Effects,review%20it%20and%20respond%20soon.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">potassium sorbate<\/a>, another synthetic preservative linked to skin and respiratory issues in people who are sensitive to it; and BHA (butylated hydroxyanisole) and BHT (butylated hydroxytoluene), two more artificial preservatives that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ewg.org\/news-insights\/news\/2025\/04\/despite-health-harm-concerns-bha-and-bht-remain-food-and-cosmetics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">may be linked<\/a> to hormone and reproductive disruption and cancer.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1lllde001s3b6nlpm4fhbv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But what if the bread is made with whole wheat or whole grains you can actually see and taste? It may still be ultraprocessed, but isn\u2019t it better for you? That is still a fiercely debated question.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/cnn-ultraprocessed-03-0463-copy.jpg\" alt=\"Many store-bought breads are considered ultraprocessed because they are made from refined flour, not whole grain flour, and they contain added sugars and preservatives.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"2500\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1lllde001t3b6n0sps4a7u@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Now, here\u2019s a tricky one: plant-based meat substitutes. Ultraprocessed to their core, many experts say these alt meats are still better for us than red and processed meats full of saturated fats or nitrates.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1lllde001u3b6ntpuo6uzk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe fat composition of beef is so undesirable for health that it\u2019s very easy to be better than that,\u201d leading nutrition researcher Dr. Walter Willett told me <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/07\/21\/health\/plant-based-meat-benefits-wellness\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">earlier this year.<\/a>\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1lllde001v3b6naa4ks2q8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cAnimal products not only have too much saturated fat but lack polyunsaturated fat, fiber and many of the minerals and vitamins available in plants,\u201d said Willett, professor of epidemiology and nutrition at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School in Boston.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1lllde001w3b6nnu98pqg0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Many of the alt-meat products have dramatically improved their nutritional profiles since they first hit the market. Recent studies <a href=\"https:\/\/gfieurope.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Guide_-Where-does-plant-based-meat-fit-in-the-UPF-conversation_19-May.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">analyzed<\/a> by the Physicians Association for Nutrition, or PAN International, found plant-based meats were dramatically lower in saturated fat, a little lower in overall calories, equal in protein, dramatically higher in fiber (beef has no fiber), and a bit higher in salt and sugar than conventional meat.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1lllde001x3b6n1vb8dx5n@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            There\u2019s also the role of plant-based meat in saving the planet. According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/gfi.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Good Food Institute<\/a>, which <a href=\"https:\/\/gfi.org\/resource\/environmental-impacts-of-alternative-proteins\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">promotes alternative proteins<\/a> and coauthored the report, replacing a beef burger with a plant-based patty can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 98% and land use by up to 97%.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1lllde001y3b6ng9goqqba@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            I could go on and on, but here\u2019s the bottom line: Deciding what is \u201cultraprocessed and bad for your health\u201d and \u201cultraprocessed, but OK to eat\u201d is really complicated \u2014 especially for a society unwilling or unable to give up inexpensive, convenient food.\n    <\/p>\n<p>        A lot of huffing and puffing going on\u2026<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1lllde001z3b6nqktiftvo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Fortunately, the world is taking action. In mid-May, the World Health Organization put out a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/articles-detail\/call-for-experts-to-develop-a-who-guideline-on-consumption-of-ultra-processed-foods\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">global clarion call<\/a> for scientists to help define and create guidelines for ultraprocessed food consumption. Once the panel is chosen, the work is expected to take two years.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1lllde00203b6n34x02gt9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A week later, the Trump Administration released its first \u201cMake America Healthy Again\u201d report, calling for action on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/05\/22\/politics\/maha-rfk-report-medicines-processed-foods-pesticides#:~:text=The%20report%20states%20that%20children,Kennedy%20told%20reporters%20on%20Thursday\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ultraprocessed foods<\/a> they say are a danger to our children\u2019s health. An August 15 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/08\/15\/health\/maha-report-draft-pesticide-ultraprocessed-food\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">leaked version<\/a> of the second report \u2014 which was supposed to announce specific policy actions \u2014 instead called for the government to \u201ccontinue efforts to develop a U.S. government-wide definition.\u201d The final report, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hhs.gov\/press-room\/maha-commission-report-childhood-disease-strategy.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">released in September,<\/a> provided no additional action.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1lllde00213b6nk5k303vo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cUnfortunately, the final MAHA report is all promises and has no teeth,\u201d University of Carolina\u2019s Popkin <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/09\/10\/health\/maha-report-children-health-response-wellness\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">told me at the time<\/a>. \u201cIn my opinion, it shows the food, agricultural, and pharmaceutical industries got to the White House and won the day.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1lllde00223b6nxphulf9y@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Andrew Nixon, deputy assistant secretary for media relations at the US Department of Health and Human Services, told me in an email the administration is confronting the UPF challenge, which is a \u201cmajor driver of the nation\u2019s chronic disease epidemic.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1lllde00233b6n76o0g9we@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cReplacing them with real, whole foods is one of the most effective ways to Make America Healthy Again,\u201d Nixon said. \u201cWe remain committed to serving the American people, not special interests or outside critics, by delivering radical transparency and upholding gold-standard science.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1lllde00243b6njra0ps5f@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Other groups have stepped into the void. The American Heart Association, for example, divided ultraprocessed food into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ahajournals.org\/doi\/10.1161\/CIR.0000000000001365\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">three categories<\/a> \u2014 least healthy, moderately healthy and healthy.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1lllde00253b6nkypfpr5w@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Understandably, the AHA is most concerned with how foods impact the heart. High-fat red and processed meats fall within the \u201cleast healthy\u201d category in the AHA report \u2014 as they should, considering their role in heart disease and colon cancer. However, red meat is also the least processed food in that category.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1lllde00263b6nbxck5sk5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            And yet, that\u2019s the point: Regulating ultraprocessed foods by additives alone \u2014 without also addressing the health concerns of too much sugar, salt and saturated fat (hello, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/03\/25\/health\/beef-tallow-healthy-seed-oils-rfk-wellness\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">beef tallow<\/a>!) \u2014 won\u2019t improve the nation\u2019s food supply and our deteriorating health.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1lllde00273b6nbt273vwu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In an effort to fix that, Monteiro is campaigning for researchers and government officials to add more ingredients to the NOVA definition often used in creating food policy.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1lllde00283b6n9f4i7pxj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cOur proposal now is to target any food with an excess of sodium, saturated fat or sugar, along with synthetic colors, flavors and non-nutritive sweeteners,\u201d Monteiro told me when I reported on a recent <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/series-do\/ultra-processed-food\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">three-part series<\/a> in the journal The Lancet. He and Popkin coauthored the articles with 41 other internationally known scientists.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1lllde00293b6nieju32em@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            However, there is a missing element, according to Harvard\u2019s Willett: \u201cThe huge blind spot of refined grains, which is the largest source of calories in the US and most countries at this time \u2014 this is not considered to be an UPF.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1lllde002a3b6non1c1zpt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Lancet series blasted the food industry, claiming global corporations continued to aggressively market and extensively profit from new and existing UPF products despite increasing evidence of harm to public health.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1lllde002b3b6n5tey3pfn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe food industry doesn\u2019t want to lose their cash cow, so they\u2019re willing to put millions into fighting government restrictions on ultraprocessed food as well as funding nutritionists who\u2019ll say there\u2019s no evidence of harm,\u201d Popkin said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1lllde002c3b6noxi9dtdn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The International Food &amp; Beverage Alliance, founded in 2008 by leading food and nonalcoholic beverage companies, told me in an email when the Lancet series published that health authorities worldwide have rejected the concept of ultraprocessed food due to its lack of scientific consensus.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1lllde002d3b6nm2z8rndk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe policy and advocacy recommendations of this series go far beyond the available evidence \u2014 proposing new regulatory action based on \u2018processing\u2019 or additive \u2018markers\u2019 and calling for the exclusion of industry from policymaking,\u201d said IFBA Secretary-General Rocco Renaldi.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1lllde002e3b6nmdm6mfmt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            California made history in early October by enacting the <a href=\"https:\/\/legiscan.com\/CA\/text\/AB1264\/id\/3248161\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">first law in the United States<\/a> to define and ultimately ban problematic ultraprocessed foods in public schools.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1lllde002f3b6nloi6vmlf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Not only does the California legislation define ultraprocessed food \u2014 not an easy task as you have seen \u2014 it requires public health officials and scientists to decide which UPFs are most harmful to human health. An \u201cultraprocessed food of concern\u201d would then be phased out of the school food supply. That\u2019s impressive, considering California is projected to serve <a href=\"https:\/\/a46.asmdc.org\/press-releases\/20250603-california-advances-first-nation-legislation-phase-out-harmful-ultra\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">over 1 billion meals<\/a> to schoolchildren in the 2025\u201326 school year.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1lllde002g3b6nkpnqn2tf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/10\/09\/health\/california-governor-bans-red-dye-no-3-wellness\/index.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">California<\/a> has also led the way in laws banning <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/06\/26\/health\/food-dyes-maha-ultraprocessed-foods-wellness\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">food dyes<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/nj.gov\/health\/eoh\/rtkweb\/documents\/fs\/1559.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">potassium bromate<\/a>, a possible carcinogen once widely used in breads, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/11\/10\/health\/food-additives-dye-brominated-vegetable-oil-wellness\/index.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">brominated vegetable oil<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/efsa.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/epdf\/10.2903\/j.efsa.2004.83\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">propylparaben<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1lllde002h3b6nxnrl4lqp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cHere in California, we are actually doing the work to protect our kids\u2019 health, and we\u2019ve been doing it since well before anyone had ever heard of the MAHA movement,\u201d said Jesse Gabriel, the Democratic California Assemblymember who introduced several of the bills, in an October 9 press conference.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1lllde002i3b6nhobwcthy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            What\u2019s so promising about the legislation is the scope of the effort. California lawmakers have considered many of the ways in which both junk and ultraprocessed foods may be harmful to human health \u2014 ingredients such as nonnutritive sweeteners; additives such as emulsifiers, stabilizers and thickeners; flavor enhancers; a host of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/01\/17\/health\/red-40-food-dyes-wellness\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">food dyes<\/a> and more.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1lllde002j3b6noq80rasu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            American scientific research on the harms of UPF additives is in its infancy, but the new law has taken that into account. Additives banned, restricted or required to carry a warning by other local, state, federal or international jurisdictions will be in the analysis. That\u2019s key, as the European Union and other countries have already regulated many additives still allowed in the US.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1lllde002k3b6nej52qhrp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Food modified to contain high amounts of saturated fat, sodium and added sugar can also be rejected, according to the law. This will help target industry strategies that may contribute to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/06\/27\/health\/child-addiction-ultraprocessed-foods-wellness\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">an addiction to ultraprocessed foods<\/a> \u2014 an increasing concern for American children <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/10\/08\/health\/ultraprocessed-food-ban-california-wellness\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">raised on UPFs<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1lllde002l3b6nvciqv3hs@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The downside? The law won\u2019t provide final details on which UPFs are most concerning until June 2028, and it won\u2019t have all UPFs out of school lunches until 2035. I\u2019m hopeful there will be useful updates as the process rolls along.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1lllde002m3b6ngkrhfqwx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            While we wait for definitive action (don\u2019t hold your breath), we still have to navigate the grocery store. Of course, the best way is to buy everything fresh and cook at home. But like you, I\u2019m far too busy to do as much of that as I would like \u2014 plus my kids are grown and the pressure to set a good example is gone (although my new grandson may change that).\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1lllde002n3b6ny3yjvcio@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Instead, I stock up on frozen veggies \u2014 many are flash frozen and have the same nutrients as when first picked. Low-sodium canned beans and other legumes keep me from having to cook dry beans from scratch.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1lllde002o3b6nkqwrufzr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            When I buy fresh produce, I try to buy organic if my budget allows. That\u2019s especially true for crops in the 2025 \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/06\/11\/health\/2025-dirty-dozen-pesticide-wellness\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Dirty Dozen<\/a>,\u201d an annual list of foods with the most (and least) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/09\/24\/health\/pesticides-produce-fruits-vegetables-toxins-wellness\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">pesticides<\/a> created by the Environmental Working Group, a health advocacy group.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1yx38u00013b6px32naneu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            I also do my best to avoid veggies and salad greens packaged in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/09\/16\/health\/food-packaging-chemical-toxins-study-wellness\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">chemical-laden plastics<\/a> (that\u2019s a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/06\/24\/health\/microplastics-food-packaging-study-wellness\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">whole other problem<\/a> I write about). I especially stay away from precut veggies (<a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC10969708\/#:~:text=The%20B%20vitamins%20are%20highly,in%20small%20losses%20of%20iron.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">loss of nutrients<\/a>) and foods sold in black plastic containers (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/10\/01\/health\/flame-retardant-black-plastic-wellness\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">read about those here<\/a>.) That\u2019s really hard because they are everywhere!\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/cnn-ultraprocessed-05-0555-copy.jpg\" alt=\"Fresh, whole foods contain essential vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and fiber that boost immunity, improve digestion and lower risk of chronic diseases.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"2500\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1lllde002p3b6nhq5m92np@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            When it comes to ready-to-heat-and-eat meals, I look for whole chicken breasts, sliced beef and pork, chicken or steak kebabs, and stews with real chunks of meat. (Here\u2019s a tip: If the package says the meat is cooked \u201csous vide,\u201d I\u2019ve found it\u2019s more likely to be whole meat.)\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1lllde002q3b6n2rarfqbt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            As for the rest of the grocery store \u2014 the nearly 70% which is ultraprocessed \u2014 I do my best. I don\u2019t know all the names of additives \u2014 much less which are harmful or beneficial \u2014 so that\u2019s not very helpful to me. I could just as easily discard a food enriched with pantothenic acid (vitamin B5), pyridoxine (vitamin B6) or cobalamin (vitamin B12) as I could one with azodicarbonamide, a bleaching agent in bread <a href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/LexUriServ\/LexUriServ.do?uri=OJ:L:2004:007:0045:0046:EN:PDF\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">banned in the EU<\/a> due to cancer concerns.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1lllde002r3b6n28d0ky1l@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Instead, I put on my detective hat, turn the product over, and read \u2014 starting with the nutrition label. Many people go straight to carbohydrates, but carbs are not necessarily the enemy \u2014 in whole foods they come naturally, along with fiber, vitamins and minerals. Foods which are overly processed, however, may need to increase levels of added sugars, salt and fat to make the food \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/31689013\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">hyperpalatable<\/a>\u201d and hard to resist.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1lllde002s3b6njdl1dj2j@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A tablespoonful of ketchup, for example, can contain 4 grams (1 teaspoon) of added sugar, while spaghetti and pizza sauces are notoriously high in added sugar as well. If you search the shelves, however, there are low-salt, no sugar and no artificial sweetener options.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1lllde002t3b6n2b9ueek0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            And this is important \u2014 the percentages on the nutrition label are only for one serving. Let\u2019s take honey peanut butter, part of a typical PB&amp;J lunch for my kids while they were growing up.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1lllde002u3b6nnxt2741m@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The label says one serving \u2014 two tablespoons of peanut butter \u2014 has 13 grams of sugar (2.5 teaspoons). So if I put 3 servings on the sandwich \u2014 that\u2019s an incredible 39 grams or 7.3 teaspoons of sugar (not counting the jelly) in what many of us consider a healthy meal for a child.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1lllde002v3b6n42x3n26z@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            (OK, you may know this, yes. But truthfully, how often do you stop and look at serving size? Yeah, me neither.)\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1lllde002w3b6nofpy0pxo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            I then move to the ingredients listed in the order of prevalence. I look for signs of overprocessing (powdered veggies, of course). Additives are always at the bottom, but other culprits rise to the occasion. If sugar is first, second or third on the list, I tend to consider the food a dessert. If ingredients at the top are healthy and sugar is toward the bottom of the list, I\u2019m not overly concerned.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1lllde002x3b6n173ijfkn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Here\u2019s a great example: An extremely popular organic bread in grocery stores has 35 ingredients \u2014 the first 21 are whole grains and seeds. The loaf has no synthetic additives, but it does have 4 grams of added sugar per serving in the form of organic molasses. Would you consider that a junk food? An ultraprocessed food overly laden with sugar? Or is it healthy? You decide.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1lllde002y3b6nwkqz3hbz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Yet you shouldn\u2019t have to decide, experts say. You should be able to go to your grocery store and buy foods that are good for you without having to play detective.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1lllde002z3b6nxx0hb3hn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe rise of ultra-processed foods (UPFs) in human diets is being driven by the growing economic and political power of the UPF industry,\u201d wrote the authors of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/lancet\/article\/PIIS0140-6736(25)01567-3\/fulltext\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">third Lancet paper<\/a>. \u201cCurbing corporate power in food systems begins with governance reform.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1lllde00303b6nlc6kevoa@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Otherwise, they added, UPFs may well \u201creplace all other food groups\u201d in the not-so-distant future.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1lllde00313b6nxgooe932@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Yes, there will always be junk food, and yes, we will all succumb at times.
