Late-night hosts reacted to the murder<\/a> of legendary director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, as well as Donald Trump<\/a>\u2019s 10-minute tangent about Christmas snakes.<\/p>\n

Jimmy Kimmel<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is the kind of weekend that makes you wonder if things will ever feel good again,\u201d said Jimmy Kimmel<\/a> on Monday evening, after a couple days of horrific news: the terror attack at a Hanukkah celebration on Australia\u2019s Bondi Beach<\/a>, a mass shooting at Brown University<\/a> in Rhode Island, and the \u201cmurder of one of our greatest directors and patriots, Rob Reiner, and his wife, Michele Reiner\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat we need in a time like this, besides common sense when it comes to guns and mental health care, is compassion and leadership,\u201d he continued. \u201cWe did not get that from our president, because he has none of it to give. Instead, we got a fool rambling about nonsense.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a much-maligned post to Truth Social, Trump claimed that Reiner and his wife \u201cpassed away\u201d, due to \u201cthe anger he caused others through his massive, unyielding, and incurable affliction with a mind crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME, sometimes referred to as TDS\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cJust when you think he can\u2019t go any lower, he somehow finds a way to do that,\u201d Kimmel responded. \u201cHis description of what happened of course is not at all what happened. And this is exactly what I\u2019ve spoken about before. This rush to pin the tail on the donkey in pursuit of the Trump-friendly narrative.<\/p>\n

\u201cNot to mention blaming his death on the fact that he is an outspoken liberal, insulting someone who has just been murdered, who leaves children behind, without having any idea of what actually happened. It\u2019s so hateful and vile.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kimmel noted that when he first saw Trump\u2019s post, he thought it was fake; \u201ceven for him that seemed like too much,\u201d he said. \u201cBut nothing is ever too much for him.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump doubled down on his comments later on Monday, calling Reiner \u201cderanged\u201d to reporters at the White House and saying: \u201cI thought he was very bad for our country.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat corroded brain is in charge of our lives,\u201d said Kimmel. \u201cIf you voted for that, it\u2019s OK to reconsider \u2026 I know from my personal interactions with Rob Reiner that he would want us to keep pointing out the loathsome atrocities that continue to ooze out of this sick and irresponsible man\u2019s mouth. And so we\u2019re going to do that, over and over again, until the rest of us wake up.\u201d<\/p>\n

Stephen Colbert<\/p>\n

Stephen Colbert<\/a> did not wade into the tragedy on the Late Show, instead focusing on Trump\u2019s Sunday, in which he \u201ccelebrated the first night of Hanukkah by holding a Christmas party, where he told a story that somehow lasted eight nights\u201d.<\/p>\n

Colbert set the scene: \u201cTrump\u2019s in front of a group of families, including small children who are waiting to see Santa \u2013 which, knowing this administration, is probably a shirtless RFK Jr.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnyway, rather that give you some canned remarks, Trump decided to do a little crowd work.\u201d After spotting a man named Dr James Jones, he launched into a 10-minute story about snakebites in Peru. \u201cTwenty-eight thousand people die a year from a snakebite of a certain snake,\u201d the president claimed. \u201cIt\u2019s a viper, right?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a speech about Christmas,\u201d Colbert reminded. \u201cYou might be thinking, why snakes? Have you forgotten the immortal words of Tiny Tim \u2013 \u2018Oh God, it got me! Suck the poison out! Hit it with a crutch, you idiot!\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Colbert also factchecked Trump\u2019s claim, and found that from the years 2000 until 2015, only 10 people died of snake bites in Peru. To quote Trump himself: \u201cThis is a terrible Christmas story.\u201d<\/p>\n

Seth Meyers<\/p>\n

And on Late Night, Seth Meyers<\/a> also delved into Trump\u2019s rambling Christmas snake tale, which left him scarred. \u201cI\u2019m sorry, but I don\u2019t think I will have a great Christmas,\u201d he said, \u201cbecause the next time I walk into someone\u2019s house for a Christmas party and see some green tinsel wrapped around the bannister, I\u2019m going to go apeshit with a golf club screaming: \u2018Watch out, it\u2019s a viper!\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m starting to think that Maga and Fox News have switched sides in the war on Christmas, because it\u2019s not just snake stories,\u201d he added. \u201cTrump has also been telling people not to buy their kids so many dolls, because his tariffs have caused price hikes.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou always need steel,\u201d said Trump at a rally last week. \u201cYou don\u2019t need 37 dolls for your daughter \u2013 two or three is nice. But you don\u2019t need 37 dolls.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOK first of all, Trump\u2019s brain is so clearly stuck in the 1950s, because the only kids\u2019 things he can think of are dolls and pencils,\u201d Meyers laughed. \u201cI mean, looking back, I guess we should all be happy that didn\u2019t end in a snake story.\u201d<\/p>\n

Meyers also mocked Fox News for running with Trump\u2019s doll story, in one clip advising its viewers to save money by not buying presents for adults this year, and forgoing slippers for grandma.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou guys have spent years whining about the radical left\u2019s \u2018war on Christmas\u2019, and now you\u2019re telling people not to buy slippers for grandma?\u201d he joked. \u201cAlso, you\u2019re Fox News.
