On a freezing morning in Iowa this week, homeowner Jess Sherwood spotted something stirring in her freshly blanketed backyard. Beneath the thick layer of fallen snow, a creature was stirring \u2014 tunneling, unseen, through the frozen landscape like a scene from an old-timey cartoon.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just saw the snow moving and wasn’t sure what animal it was,\u201d Sherwood told The Dodo. \u201cBut then he popped up, and I just started laughing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sherwood captured the surprise reveal on video:<\/p>\n

Turns out, it was a local squirrel in Sherwood\u2019s yard who\u2019d been doing all that tunneling. It seems he was in search of a few tasty acorns that he\u2019d hidden in the ground when the weather had been warmer.<\/p>\n

Sherwood, an animal lover, was delighted to observe him in action:<\/p>\n

\u201cI honestly thought I had to share it \u2026 because it was so funny,\u201d she said. \u201cBringing a lil cheer to everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n

The tunneling behavior and the collecting of stashed food are among the techniques squirrels use to survive<\/a> the long winter months.<\/p>\n

But the squirrels in this backyard have another thing to thank: neighborly kindness.<\/p>\n

To help keep the squirrels\u2019 bellies full, Sherwood leaves out offerings of nuts all through winter. And they repay her by simply being themselves.<\/p>\n
