\n\tHaving worked as an openly LGBTQ<\/a> actor for more than a decade, Ben Whishaw<\/a> is no stranger to the heteronormative pressure that comes with Hollywood.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe Golden Globe winner recently explained why there are \u201cnot very many\u201d out gay<\/a> actors at his level, noting that he understands the need to separate his private from his professional life, given many in the industry\u2019s outdated standards.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt\u2019s complicated and probably different for every individual, but I think it\u2019s still something to do with the fact that if you want to be really successful, you have to conform to what is deemed to be heterosexual taste, or something,\u201d he told The Guardian<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cOr be sexy in a heterosexual way. I\u2019m always amazed by how much sex is underneath everything, actually. Or desire. There\u2019s still a lot of homophobia and hatred. I mean, it\u2019s better, but it\u2019s still true,\u201d Whishaw continued. \u201cAlso, who knows what journey people are on with these things? I don\u2019t blame people for being private.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tWhishaw, who publicly acknowledged his sexuality<\/a> for the first time in 2014, reunites with Passages co-writer\/director Ira Sachs<\/a> on his new film Peter Hujar\u2019s Day<\/a>. He explained the significance of playing the gay photographer in a film from a gay director.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt definitely feels different if you\u2019re making a project that\u2019s about gayness or queerness. And there are lots of beautiful gay directors \u2013 but not that many.
