Saracens<\/a> coach Alex Goode<\/a> has shed light on a training ground conversation Owen Farrell<\/a> had with Noah Caluori<\/a> shortly after his Saracens debut, which he believes had a \u201chuge impact\u201d on the 19-year-old.<\/p>\n

The former England<\/a> captain returned to Saracens over the summer after a year with Racing 92<\/a> in the Top 14, and returned to a club where \u201ca lot of the team hadn\u2019t been around him,\u201d Goode said on the Stick to Rugby<\/a> podcast recently. One of those players was surely Noah Caluori<\/a>, who would have been 17 when the fly-half left for Paris.<\/p>\n

Goode, who became an assistant coach at the club after retiring at the end of last season, explained how players were curious about how the former England captain conducted himself at training. While there were stories of him \u201cshouting\u201d in training, the former Saracens full-back explained that Farrell \u201calways wants the best for the club.\u201d<\/p>\n

Goode went on to single out an interaction between Farrell and Caluori shortly after his try-scoring debut in the Gallagher PREM against the Newcastle<\/a> Red Bulls.\u00a0Caluori, who had just turned 19 at that point, was \u201cmoping around\u201d in training before being confronted by Farrell.<\/p>\n

The winger went on to score five tries in his starting Saracens debut a few weeks later against Sale<\/a> Sharks, before being selected in Steve Borthwick\u2019s England squad for the Quilter Nations Series.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s probably an example he doesn\u2019t want, but Noah Caluori comes in week one, he\u2019s on the bench, and he scores up in Newcastle with a big swan dive. Brilliant,\u201d Goode said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe week after, some of the senior players come back, he\u2019s not involved and he\u2019s about to go on loan at Ampthill.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s a young kid, all over TikTok, this young star on social media with loads of followers. He\u2019s in training, moping around a bit like an 18-year-old probably does. He\u2019s in a first-team session but he\u2019s only been a professional player for a couple of months at that point, so he doesn\u2019t really know what it\u2019s like.<\/p>\n

\u201cOwen just goes to him and says, \u2018Are you injured?\u2019 He says he\u2019s got a bit of a sore calf. Owen asks again, \u2018Are you injured?\u2019 He says he\u2019s got a bit of a cold. Owen just says, \u2018Train properly. Just train properly. That\u2019s all we ask.\u2019 Just stern.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe trained the house down that day. He went to Ampthill that week, got man of the match, then gets picked for Sarries again and scored five tries on his first start. I\u2019m not saying he wouldn\u2019t have done that without the conversation, but I\u2019m pretty sure it had a huge impact. Otherwise, he would have cruised through training, no one would have had the confidence to say it to him. The coaches probably would have said he\u2019s young and needs time, but Owen got in front of it and he didn\u2019t say \u2018this would be best for you\u2019 \u2014 he just said, \u2018train well.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cI think it\u2019s a skill that very few have, and it comes from a place of wanting the best for the individual and for the whole team. He knew Noah wasn\u2019t playing that week, but if he trains well it lifts the bibs, and then the team gets a better knock-out and you\u2019re in a better place.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think it\u2019s stuff like that where his value is probably underestimated, but it\u2019s so important. You look at the Lions<\/a> tour, they were scratchy in the first couple of weeks. Lots of errors. From my perception, there were so many talented people on that tour, but they weren\u2019t the sort who were going to grab hold of things, not like a Sexton or a Farrell. Very talented, but different.<\/p>\n

\u201cOwen Farrell gets called up and people say he\u2019s not the right player, he\u2019s not in the right position, he\u2019s not Elliot Daly\u2019s replacement. But you see Wigglesworth, Sexton, Andy Farrell \u2014 all competitors \u2014 saying we need someone who can drag the bib standards up for everyone, for the whole group.<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause if you\u2019re on the training field and you don\u2019t kick-chase well enough, or you don\u2019t put the effort in, Owen will tell you. And that\u2019s more powerful coming from a player than from any of the coaches.
