Ari Aster<\/a> is known for making family dramas turned, well, horrific, but the auteur recently experienced some family drama of his own. After Aster\u2019s third film<\/a> \u201cBeau Is Afraid<\/a>\u201d was a box office flop, Aster\u2019s father suggested that he solely direct instead.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen \u2018Beau Is Afraid\u2019 flopped, my dad did tell me, \u2018Uh, maybe you shouldn\u2019t write the next one,\u2019\u201d Aster said during the \u201cWTF with Marc Maron\u201d<\/a> podcast. \u201cHe might\u2019ve been right.\u201d <\/p>\n

However, the director did write his next film, \u201cEddington,\u201d which is now in theaters<\/a>. As for his mom, Aster added, \u201cShe\u2019s very supportive. I think, you know, certain things she likes more than others \u2026 I\u2019m lucky in that sense.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBeau Is Afraid\u201d had an estimated budget of $35 million; the A24 film grossed only a third of that at the box office.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was pretty sad that it was, like, so maligned,\u201d Aster said. \u201cThere are a lot of people who reached out to tell me that they loved it, and I really, that helped, but yeah, no, it was a bummer because it was a huge, you know, it lost money, and critically, I wouldn\u2019t say it was, like, reviled, but it was definitely, like, there was no consensus whatsoever.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added, \u201cAll these things you take away after you release a film and you\u2019re like, OK, it\u2019s out of my hands now, I can\u2019t really avoid people\u2019s reactions, responses,\u201d Aster said. \u201cIt\u2019s like, you know, you kind of learn something \u2026 No matter what the response, you\u2019re proud of for sticking with [decisions you made], and then certain things where you\u2019re like, \u2018Eh, I\u2019m not sure if it was like worth losing that much of the audience for that decision.\u2019 I think I ejected, like, a number of people from the theater. I could\u2019ve used them.\u201d<\/p>\n

The \u201cMidsommar\u201d director previously told\u00a0Vanity Fair<\/a>\u00a0that \u201cBeau Is Afraid\u201d had an \u201cindifferent\u201d audience which was \u201cfrustrating\u201d to him. \u201cWhen you make a film like this, it feels in some ways like you\u2019re just pulling yourself inside out,\u201d Aster said. \u201cWith this film especially as it came out, I felt very protective<\/a> of it. I\u2019ve said this before, but it\u2019s\u00a0absolutely my favorite of my own films<\/a>\u00a0and I think the furthest I\u2019ve been able to go.\u201d<\/p>\n
