The comments didn&#8217;t attract much notice at the time, but similar remarks in a new <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/newsletters\/2025-12-16\/-baldur-s-gate-3-maker-promises-divinity-will-be-next-level\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/newsletters\/2025-12-16\/-baldur-s-gate-3-maker-promises-divinity-will-be-next-level\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Bloomberg interview<\/a> about Larian&#8217;s next big RPG, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/games\/rpg\/divinity-guide\/\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/games\/rpg\/divinity-guide\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Divinity<\/a>, have kicked up a storm of complaints which the studio is now pushing back on.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">In Bloomberg&#8217;s words, Larian has been &#8220;pushing hard&#8221; on generative AI and its developers &#8220;often use AI tools to explore ideas, flesh out PowerPoint presentations, develop concept art and write placeholder text.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"fd5e427a-f4de-4f26-9db2-3a8581404d96-2\">Vincke reiterated in the interview that the studio isn&#8217;t using generative AI to create any of the art, voices, or writing we see in its games. But word of Larian&#8217;s generative AI use has been taken as a betrayal by some fans, who&#8217;ve taken to social media to express their displeasure, and an ex-employee has urged the company to reconsider its stance.<\/p>\n<p>Artist Selena Tobin, who&#8217;s credited as a junior environment artist on Baldur&#8217;s Gate 3, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/bsky.app\/profile\/anoxicart.bsky.social\/post\/3ma4kiiuu5s2g\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/bsky.app\/profile\/anoxicart.bsky.social\/post\/3ma4kiiuu5s2g\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">said on Bluesky<\/a> that she loved working at Larian &#8220;until AI.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Reconsider and change your direction, like, yesterday,&#8221; wrote Tobin. &#8220;Show your employees some respect. they are world-class &amp; do not need AI assistance to come up with amazing ideas.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">Keep up to date with the most important stories and the best deals, as picked by the PC Gamer team.<\/p>\n<p>Others are speculating on the likelihood of AI-generated placeholders slipping into Divinity, a phenomenon we&#8217;ve seen several times <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/games\/city-builder\/ubisoft-touches-up-ai-art-placeholder-that-slipped-into-anno-117-but-fans-are-not-happy-it-was-there-to-begin-with-of-all-the-video-games-not-anno\/\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/games\/city-builder\/ubisoft-touches-up-ai-art-placeholder-that-slipped-into-anno-117-but-fans-are-not-happy-it-was-there-to-begin-with-of-all-the-video-games-not-anno\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">in other games<\/a>, including this year&#8217;s Game Awards winner <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/nyanomancer\/status\/1917435885429150176?lang=en\" data-url=\"https:\/\/x.com\/nyanomancer\/status\/1917435885429150176?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Clair Obscur<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"2472587e-0145-41ce-b744-88c798d78bc9\"><a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Cromwelp\/status\/2000989959239414105?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Cromwelp\/status\/2000989959239414105?s=20\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">On X<\/a>, Larian publishing director Michael Douse responded to the criticism, contrasting Larian&#8217;s use of the technology with that of less-scrupulous developers who would directly feature AI-made assets in their games, or use the technology as an excuse for layoffs.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Back in April our stance on AI in workflows was established so I&#8217;m not sure why this is coming up now as a controversy (the timing of it!),&#8221; wrote Douse. &#8220;We continue to hire people across all departments, not trim. Our goal is to make life better for individual workflows, not worse. We want to make better games that don&#8217;t feature AI content in them, where much of the industry will feature AI content. We want everyone to have fulfilling, creative roles &amp; keep their jobs, in an industry of mass layoffs. In other words, I&#8217;m not entirely sure we are the ideal target for the level of scorn.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Related articles<\/p>\n<p>An exasperated-sounding Vincke also elaborated on the studio&#8217;s generative AI use <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/LarAtLarian\/status\/2001011042642505833?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/x.com\/LarAtLarian\/status\/2001011042642505833?s=20\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">on X<\/a>, denying the &#8220;pushing hard&#8221; characterization, and saying that AI tools are used for ideation and rough composition, but not beyond that.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Holy fuck guys we&#8217;re not &#8216;pushing hard&#8217; for or replacing concept artists with AI,&#8221; Vincke wrote. &#8220;We have a team of 72 artists of which 23 are concept artists and we are hiring more. The art they create is original and I&#8217;m very proud of what they do.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I was asked explicitly about concept art and our use of Gen AI. I answered that we use it to explore things. I didn&#8217;t say we use it to develop concept art. The artists do that. And they are indeed world class artists.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We use AI tools to explore references, just like we use Google and art books. At the very early ideation stages we use it as a rough outline for composition which we replace with original concept art.
