{"id":327957,"date":"2025-12-21T10:13:16","date_gmt":"2025-12-21T10:13:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/327957\/"},"modified":"2025-12-21T10:13:16","modified_gmt":"2025-12-21T10:13:16","slug":"disney-wins-legal-action-over-peter-cushing-resurrection-in-rogue-one","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/327957\/","title":{"rendered":"Disney Wins Legal Action Over Peter Cushing &#8220;Resurrection&#8221; in &#8216;Rogue One&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It appears that Disney has succeeded in a bid to throw out a lawsuit against the company over its use of Peter Cushing\u2019s likeness in Rogue One.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>When Grand Moff Tarkin was brought back for Rogue One using the likeness of Peter Cushing \u2014 created with a combination of CGI and actor Guy Henry \u2014 it was somewhat controversial among fans. Some felt the CGI fell in the uncanny valley, where it was good enough for a video game but not a live action movie, while others were concerned that Cushing\u2019s likeness had been resurrected by a corporation without his consent.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It was reported at the time that Lucasfilm did have the Cushing estate\u2019s consent to use his likeness for Tarkin in the film, but that didn\u2019t stop British company <a href=\"https:\/\/www.starwarsnewsnet.com\/2024\/09\/disney-sued-over-use-of-peter-cushings-image-in-rogue-one.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Tyburn Film Productions suing Lucasfilm<\/a> over the decision to use it without consulting them first. That happened just over a year ago, and it appears Disney\u2019s lawyers have been successful in its attempts to get the case thrown out.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/media-telecom\/lucasfilm-wins-bid-throw-out-uk-lawsuit-over-resurrection-star-wars-character-2025-12-18\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Reuters<\/a>, Disney finally overturned the case this week. Tyburn Film Productions claimed that they had signed a deal with Peter Cushing in 1993 that gave them the right to resurrect the actor\u2019s likeness first by way of visual effects, and because Disney did it without their consent, they lost \u00a3250,000 ($333,725).<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Disney have tried to get the case thrown out twice over the past year but had been unsuccessful until this week, when the judge finally ruled that \u201cit is impossible to identify anything at all that belonged to Tyburn which can be said to have been transferred\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That doesn\u2019t necessarily mean that Lucasfilm and Disney weren\u2019t wrong to resurrect a deceased actor for their latest film, just that there was no evidence that prior agreements prevented them from doing so.
