Last fall, James Hetfield<\/a> said that he didn\u2019t want Metallica<\/a> to become another \u201clegacy band that just plays their greatest hits.\u201d<\/a> I\u2019d say releasing a theatrical Christmas cover wouldn\u2019t certainly achieve said goal.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s right, Hetfield has unveiled a spoken word version of \u201cA Visit From St. Nicholas,\u201d<\/a> aka \u201cTwas The Night Before Christmas\u201d for all you Christmas plebeians. This much-needed dose of Yuletide joy debuted on the band\u2019s own Maximum Metallica<\/a> SiriusXM channel, with the legendary rockers asking listeners everywhere to \u201cgrab your cocoa and settle in by the fire\u201d as Hetfield does his thing.<\/p>\n

And boy oh boy does Hetfield, indeed, do his thing. Despite some folks previously critiquing his singing voice<\/a>, Hetfield\u2019s gruff, bassy pipes are the perfect delivery vehicle for this holiday classic. If anything, they add just the right amount of \u201cdarkness\u201d and general intensity that perfectly pairs with the slightly edgy qualities of the original song\/poem.\u00a0In fact, I even like this rendition more than that one time he covered \u201cEnter Sandman\u201d after inhaling helium<\/a>.<\/p>\n
