The government\u2019s intention is to instead break any AI-related\u00a0legislation up\u00a0into smaller chunks.\u00a0Nudification\u00a0apps, for example,\u00a0will be banned as part of the government’s new Violence Against Women and Girls Strategy, AI chatbots are being looked at through a review of the Online Safety Act,\u00a0while\u00a0there will also need to be legislation for AI Growth Labs<\/a> \u2014 testbeds where\u00a0companies can experiment with their products before going to market.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Asked about an AI bill by MPs on Dec. 3<\/a>, Kendall said: \u201cThere are measures we\u00a0will\u00a0need to take to make sure we get the most\u00a0on\u00a0growth and deal with regulatory issues. If there are\u00a0measures\u00a0we need to\u00a0do\u00a0to protect kids online, we will take those. I am thinking about it more in terms of specific areas where we may need to act rather than a big all-encompassing bill.\u201d<\/p>\n

The team in Kendall’s department which looks at frontier AI regulation, meanwhile, has been reassigned, according to two people familiar with the team.<\/p>\n

Polling by the Ada Lovelace Institute shows\u00a0Labour\u2019s\u00a0leadership is out of sync\u00a0with public views on AI,\u00a0with 9 in 10 wanting<\/a>\u00a0an independent AI regulator with enforcement powers.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThe public\u00a0wants\u00a0independent\u00a0regulation,\u201d said Ada Lovelace Director Gaia Marcus. \u201cThey\u00a0prioritize\u00a0fairness, positive social impacts and safety in trade-offs against economic gains, speed of innovation and international competition.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Political leadership\u00a0must\u00a0step in to bridge that gap,\u00a0former\u00a0U.K.\u00a0prime minister Tony Blair wrote in a\u00a0report last month<\/a>. \u201cTechnological competitiveness is not a priority for voters because European leaders have failed to connect it to what citizens care about: their security, their prosperity and their children\u2019s futures,\u201d\u00a0he wrote.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
