{"id":331417,"date":"2025-12-23T11:11:12","date_gmt":"2025-12-23T11:11:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/331417\/"},"modified":"2025-12-23T11:11:12","modified_gmt":"2025-12-23T11:11:12","slug":"alphabet-agrees-to-buy-intersect-power-for-4-75bn","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/331417\/","title":{"rendered":"Alphabet agrees to buy Intersect Power for $4.75bn"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Unlock the Editor\u2019s Digest for free<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__content-sign-up-topic-description o3-type-body-base\">Roula Khalaf, Editor of the FT, selects her favourite stories in this weekly newsletter.<\/p>\n<p>Alphabet agreed to acquire data centre energy group Intersect Power for close to $5bn, boosting the Google parent\u2019s power generation as it races to develop cutting-edge artificial intelligence. <\/p>\n<p>The deal, announced on Monday, would enable <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/stream\/6656b3e4-1a78-4960-90a0-8d422450f9a6\" title=\"\" data-trackable=\"link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Alphabet<\/a> to bolster its data centre capacity, said Sundar Pichai, the group\u2019s chief executive.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIntersect will help us expand capacity, operate more nimbly in building new power generation in lockstep with new data centre load, and reimagine energy solutions to drive US innovation and leadership.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Intersect, which is backed by private equity group TPG, develops infrastructure, including renewable power sources, for data centre campuses.<\/p>\n<p>The deal to buy Intersect for $4.75bn in cash, plus debt, broadens Alphabet\u2019s access to power at a time when the technology giant is competing with rivals including OpenAI, Elon Musk\u2019s xAI and Meta to train and run energy-intensive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/artificial-intelligence\" title=\"\" data-trackable=\"link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">AI<\/a> models.<\/p>\n<p>Each of those companies has sought ways of expanding their access to power, either via the grid or by generating power on-site.<\/p>\n<p>Alphabet said the deal would augment its \u201congoing commitment to partnering with utilities and energy developers across the sector to unlock abundant, reliable, affordable energy supply that enables the build-out of data centre infrastructure\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"n-content-recommended__title o3-type-body-highlight\">Recommended<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/cc07f853-4f1d-4e69-8bfb-9220175656ab\" data-trackable=\"image-link\" data-trackable-context-story-link=\"image-link\" tabindex=\"-1\" aria-hidden=\"true\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"o-teaser__image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/https:\/\/images.ft.com\/v3\/image\/raw\/https%3A%2F%2Fd1e00ek4ebabms.cloudfront.net%2Fproduction%2F27c7c3.jpeg\" alt=\"An illustration showing Earth surrounded by tangled orbital paths, multiple satellites, and a large satellite resembling a Google data centre.\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Big Tech company took a minority stake in Intersect last year, partnering with the group to develop energy plants for data centres. Those assets, as well as Intersect\u2019s staff, are included in the transaction. <\/p>\n<p>Intersect has $15bn of assets operating in the US or under construction, according to the company.
