Brian Henson, the director of The Muppet Christmas Carol<\/a>, has opened up about the making of the beloved Charles Dickens spoof.<\/p>\n

Released in 1992, The Muppet Christmas Carol is a retelling of A Christmas Carol<\/a> starring Michael Caine<\/a> as Ebenezer Scrooge, amid a cast of muppets. <\/p>\n

The film was warmly received upon its release, and is widely considered a high point of the muppet franchise and a modern Christmas classic.<\/p>\n

In a new interview with Metro<\/a>, Henson \u2013 the son of legendary muppet puppeteers Jim and Jane Henson \u2013 said that press had initially been \u201cvery critical\u201d of his decision to omit certain muppets from the cast. <\/p>\n

\u201cI made a decision that if we can\u2019t find a delightful spot to cast a well-known Muppet character, we just won\u2019t put them in the movie,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo Rowlf the dog isn\u2019t in the movie; the Electric Mayhem band are just in the back of Fozziwig\u2019s playing a song, but they\u2019re not characters; the Swedish Chef isn\u2019t in it ever. We decided to just not worry about that, if we couldn\u2019t find someplace to cast a favourite.\u201d<\/p>\n

There was also, he added, a more personal factor in his decision to leave some characters out of the adaptation \u2013 the death of his father Jim in 1990.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re also hearing I was avoiding my dad\u2019s characters other than Kermit, because Dr Teeth was [voiced by] my dad,\u201d he said. \u201cI was like, \u2018We can work on Kermit, but I\u2019m not ready to work on Dr Teeth; I\u2019m not ready to work on Rowlf the dog. Scooter\u2019s not in it.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s a lot of favourites that that aren\u2019t in the movie, and I got some critical kickback because of that as well.\u201d<\/p>\n

Henson also addressed Caine\u2019s performance as Scrooge, which has been celebrated for its sincerity despite the presence of muppets around him. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s because he\u2019s an excellent comedian that he knew that playing it straight was going to make the comedy even better that was coming from the Muppets,\u201d Henson said. <\/p>\n

\u201cIf I had gotten a purely dramatic actor out of England \u2013 of which there are many terrific ones \u2013 without those comedic chops, I think they would always feel like, I\u2019m not doing this right. I should be funny, I should have my moments because I\u2019m in a Muppet movie\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

He added: \u201cAnd Michael, because his career is sort of half comedy, half drama \u2013 he definitely got it and so he never was ever insecure about that choice.\u201d<\/p>\n
