A big part of that comes down to length.  <\/p>\n<p>Classic games like \u201cBioshock,\u201d \u201cDishonored,\u201d \u201cDead Space,\u201d \u201cUncharted 2,\u201d \u201cThe Last of Us,\u201d \u201cBatman: Arkham City,\u201d \u201cMass Effect 2,\u201d \u201cAssassin\u2019s Creed IV: Black Flag,\u201d \u201cFallout 3\u201d and more all clocked in with 12-25 hour campaigns with many able to double their playing hour count with sidequests and extras.<\/p>\n<p>These days, games running that length often find themselves rebuffed by certain players who won\u2019t touch anything that runs under 40-50 hours (or at least not until it goes on sale).  At the same time, expanding a game to run for 40-50 hours not only requires much more development time but also may alienate audiences who don\u2019t have the time to devote to a lengthy game.<\/p>\n<p>In a new interview with <a href=\"https:\/\/gameinformer.com\/exclusive-interview\/2025\/12\/23\/bethesda-talks-fallouts-future-and-lessons-learned\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Game Informer<\/a>, Bethesda\u2019s Studio Design Director Emil Pagliarulo says that when the company finally delivers \u201cFallout 5,\u201d something that isn\u2019t expected to happen until years after \u201cThe Elder Scrolls 6\u201d arrives, it\u2019s going to be long\u2026 real long.  Asked about the goal of the games, he says the developers:<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[Want to] give fans a story that they can get into and systems that they love and really just an experience that they play not for 20 hours and not for 100 hours, but an experience they can play for 200, 300, you know, 600 hours.<\/p>\n<p>My hope going forward: Keep doing what we\u2019ve done, and also to evolve. And evolve in a way that is where the industry has gone and where players have gone, so you\u2019re not stuck in the past.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The comments don\u2019t necessarily suggest a longer campaign than past entries, but certainly a more fleshed-out world and systems that allow for much more time spent in that \u2018world\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>The last mainline entry, \u201cFallout 4,\u201d takes around 30 hours to complete its campaign, but completionists can end up playing around six times that amount.
