Ben Stokes has been forced to withdraw from England’s<\/a> final Test against India at The Oval<\/a> due to injury.<\/p>\n Stokes<\/a> battled through the fifth day of the fourth Test at Old Trafford with a shoulder injury, bowling long spells while grimacing after almost every delivery. But with such a short turnaround between the matches, he will miss the decider, which starts on Thursday.<\/p>\n Ollie Pope will step up from vice-captain to captain the side, who hold a 2-1 lead in the series. Stokes has been replaced by allrounder Jacob Bethell, whose left-arm spin allows England to include an extra seamer at the expense of Liam Dawson.<\/p>\n Bethell has previously been used as a No.3 but will bat in Stokes’ position of No.6. He took 5-72 with the ball in the first innings before getting through cramp to make 141 with the bat as England posted a mammoth first-innings total.<\/p>\n But he was seen struggling with his right shoulder on the morning of the final day and looked in pain while bowling the opening spell. “Obviously it\u2019s disappointing not to be able to finish the series. I\u2019ve got a decent tear of a muscle I can\u2019t pronounce,” Stokes said.<\/p>\n \u201cWe took as long as possible to make this decision, and I came down here to give myself every chance of playing. But after chatting with the medical team and Baz (coach Brendon McCullum), it\u2019s one of those where you have to weight he risk against the rewards – and the risk was far too high.<\/p>\n \u201cWe had to look at the worst possible scenario – I could have played and nothing happened, but I also could have played and something bad happened.\u201d<\/p>\n His absence, plus the rotation of the seam attack, changes the make-up of the team.
