{"id":336415,"date":"2025-12-26T11:02:05","date_gmt":"2025-12-26T11:02:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/336415\/"},"modified":"2025-12-26T11:02:05","modified_gmt":"2025-12-26T11:02:05","slug":"martin-scorsese-remembers-his-friend-rob-reiner-in-new-tribute","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/336415\/","title":{"rendered":"Martin Scorsese Remembers His Friend Rob Reiner in New Tribute"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/martin-scorsese\/\" id=\"auto-tag_martin-scorsese\" data-tag=\"martin-scorsese\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Martin Scorsese<\/a> paid <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/tribute\/\" id=\"auto-tag_tribute\" data-tag=\"tribute\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">tribute<\/a> to his longtime friend <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/rob-reiner\/\" id=\"auto-tag_rob-reiner\" data-tag=\"rob-reiner\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Rob Reiner<\/a> in a moving essay for The New York Times published on Christmas Day. \u201cRob Reiner was my friend, and so was Michele,\u201d the legendary director <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/12\/25\/opinion\/culture\/martin-scorsese-rob-reiner.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">wrote<\/a>, including Reiner\u2019s late wife in his thoughts. \u201cFrom now on, I\u2019ll have to use the past tense, and that fills me with such profound sadness. But there\u2019s no other choice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tScorsese recalls crossing paths with Reiner for the first time in the Los Angeles comedy scene of the early 1970s, when both of them were just starting out in their careers. \u201cRight away, I loved hanging out with Rob,\u201d he wrote. \u201cWe had a natural affinity for each other. He was hilarious and sometimes bitingly funny, but he was never the kind of guy who would take over the room.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tDecades later, Scorsese cast Reiner in a key supporting role in 2013\u2019s The Wolf of Wall Street, playing the father of reckless money man Jordan Belfort (Leonardo DiCaprio). \u201cHe could improvise with the best, he was a master at comedy, he worked beautifully with Leo and the rest of the guys, and he understood the human predicament of his character: The man loved his son, he was happy with his success, but he knew that he was destined for a fall,\u201d Scorsese wrote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tHe particularly noted Reiner\u2019s fine acting in a pivotal scene where DiCaprio\u2019s character considers walking away from his swashbuckling life of high-finance fraud. \u201cThe look on Rob\u2019s face, as he realizes that Leo is hesitating and that he ultimately won\u2019t stop, is so eloquent,\u201d Scorsese wrote. \u201c\u2018You got all the money in the world,\u2019 he says. \u2018You need everybody else\u2019s money?\u2019 A loving father, mystified by his son. I was moved by the delicacy and openness of his performance when we shot it, moved once again as we brought the scene together in the edit and moved as I watched the finished picture. Now, it breaks my heart to even think of the tenderness of Rob\u2019s performance in this and other scenes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tReiner famously based Marty DiBergi, his documentary-filmmaker character in 1984\u2019s This Is Spinal Tap, on Scorsese\u2019s on-screen presence in The Last Waltz. \u201cHe didn\u2019t like it at first,\u201d Reiner told <a data-id=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/rob-reiner-spinal-tap-2-interview-podcast-1235416121\/\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/rob-reiner-spinal-tap-2-interview-podcast-1235416121\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Rolling Stone<\/a> earlier this year. \u201cWhen he first saw it, he said, \u2018Ah, you are making fun of me.\u2019 But now he\u2019s come to really love it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tIn the Times essay, Scorsese celebrates Reiner\u2019s work in Spinal Tap (\u201ca kind of immaculate creation\u201d), and  says that 1990\u2019s Misery is his favorite of Reiner\u2019s films.<\/p>\n<p>\t\tTrending Stories<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tSince the Reiners\u2019 tragic deaths on Dec. 14, tributes have poured in from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/tv-movies\/tv-movie-news\/rob-reiner-michele-billy-crystal-larry-david-tribute-1235485642\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">across the<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/tv-movies\/tv-movie-news\/hollywood-stars-rob-reiner-tributes-1235484076\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">entertainment world<\/a>. Harry Connick Jr., who did the music for 1989\u2019s When Harry Met Sally, wrote that Reiner \u201cchanged my life\u201d in an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/rob-reiner-harry-connick-jr-when-harry-met-sally-tribute-1235486997\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">exclusive tribute<\/a> for Rolling Stone.
