At the epicentre was <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/bands-artists\/concerts-shows\/black-sabbath-ozzy-osbourne-back-to-the-beginning-review\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/bands-artists\/concerts-shows\/black-sabbath-ozzy-osbourne-back-to-the-beginning-review\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Back To The Beginning<\/a>: the spectacular that cast the world\u2019s gaze onto Birmingham as <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/artist\/ozzy-osbourne\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/artist\/ozzy-osbourne\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"\/artist\/ozzy-osbourne\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Ozzy Osbourne<\/a> and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/artist\/black-sabbath\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/artist\/black-sabbath\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"\/artist\/black-sabbath\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Black Sabbath<\/a> called it quits. Bands from Ice Nine Kills to <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/artist\/killswitch-engage\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/artist\/killswitch-engage\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"\/artist\/killswitch-engage\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Killswitch Engage<\/a> cemented their arena status, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/artist\/sleep-token\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/artist\/sleep-token\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"\/artist\/sleep-token\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Sleep Token<\/a> grew even more enormous by headlining Download for the first time, and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/artist\/iron-maiden\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/artist\/iron-maiden\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"\/artist\/iron-maiden\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Iron Maiden<\/a> and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/artist\/linkin-park\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/artist\/linkin-park\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"\/artist\/linkin-park\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Linkin Park<\/a> conquered stadiums in victorious fashion. As the New Year looms, we got Metal Hammer\u2019s pool of writers to wax lyrical on the best gigs they attended over the last 12 months.<\/p>\n<p class=\"vanilla-image-block\" style=\"padding-top:16.20%;\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/b5iZW9TMgSWrCk5MChwwoh.jpg\" alt=\"A divider for Metal Hammer\"   loading=\"lazy\" data-new-v2-image=\"true\" data-original-mos=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/b5iZW9TMgSWrCk5MChwwoh.jpg\" data-pin-media=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/b5iZW9TMgSWrCk5MChwwoh.jpg\" class=\"inline\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-8c4e1b25-3793-488a-873c-3df95494242d\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/>Knocked Loose (Ancienne Belgique, Brussels, Belgium \u2013 March 24)<\/p>\n<p id=\"a59a14e1-5d2d-496d-ac52-d62c726024b5\">Hardcore was never supposed to be this heightened. It was never supposed to be experienced in rooms of this magnitude, either. But the fact that <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/features\/kncked-loose-tour-interview-2024\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/features\/kncked-loose-tour-interview-2024\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Knocked Loose<\/a> managed to curate a show this emotional and gripping while still feeling dangerous indicates just how far the genre has travelled in recent years. An unrelenting joy from start to finish, each bludgeoning track was intricately woven into the next and every breakdown was delivered with diabolical intent. The quintet dealt out as many spinkicks and flying fists as the tireless masses before them, making this the sort of show that gets talked about for years to come. The definition of generational. Jack Rogers<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-71de2d07-c491-45af-974f-692ac04f3ffa\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/>Satyricon (Inferno festival, Oslo, Norway \u2013 April 19)<a id=\"elk-seasonal\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"da9b35f3-64ea-4be8-9aa9-dc35ce3cdb0a-0\"><a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/features\/satyricon-interview-munch-black-metal-2022\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/features\/satyricon-interview-munch-black-metal-2022\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Satyricon<\/a> might be divisive in <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/features\/the-40-best-black-metal-albums-ever\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/features\/the-40-best-black-metal-albums-ever\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">black metal<\/a>, but their Inferno headline show was a unifying experience. It wasn\u2019t just down to Oslo\u2019s Rockefeller being rammed to the point of critical mass; frontman Satyr has a remarkable knack for bending audiences to his singular will. Kicking off with Now Diabolical, Repined Bastard Nation and Black Crow On A Tombstone, these were massed robot-army marches that made you feel alive and delirious. They zeroed on something essential, and the tribute Satyr paid to late Inferno founder Jan-Martin Jensen added an emotional dimension that made its way into their indomitable anthem, Mother North, every soul in the venue singing along as one. Jonathan Selzer<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-f699dfcb-1d3f-41e1-afe2-1ad6c53739cc\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/>Nine Inch Nails (O2 Arena, London, UK \u2013 June 18)<\/p>\n<p id=\"d0643e95-85a5-413b-a41d-3f3625dd3c3d\">My birthday\u2019s in June, and one of the best celebrations was in 2022, when I saw <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/artist\/nine-inch-nails\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/artist\/nine-inch-nails\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"\/artist\/nine-inch-nails\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Nine Inch Nails<\/a> twice at Cornwall\u2019s Eden Project and once at London\u2019s Brixton Academy, within the space of a few days. So when I saw they were playing Manchester and London on consecutive dates this June, I had to go. Starting with piano on a central B-stage, moving through the hits on a strobe-and-shadow-filled main stage, and including a dance remix section, these gigs showed a band still at the top of their game and unafraid to fuck with their own conventions. Probably. But how can anything compete with the most epic, star-studded and emotional metal gig of all time? Heavy music\u2019s Live Aid wasn\u2019t just a brilliant tribute to the band that started it all; it was the perfect, crystallised celebration of the genre itself. If all we got were the likes of <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/artist\/lamb-of-god\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/artist\/lamb-of-god\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"\/artist\/lamb-of-god\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Lamb Of God<\/a>, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/artist\/alice-in-chains\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/artist\/alice-in-chains\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"\/artist\/alice-in-chains\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Alice In Chains<\/a>, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/artist\/metallica\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/artist\/metallica\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"\/artist\/metallica\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Metallica<\/a> and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/artist\/slayer\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/artist\/slayer\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"\/artist\/slayer\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Slayer<\/a> smashing out the classics, it would have still been an all-timer. To then bid farewell to Black Sabbath was the icing on the cake. Little did we know, just over two weeks later, Back To The Beginning would have an even greater, devastatingly poignant legacy. Merlin Alderslade<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-fe66ab24-11ab-4ffc-a3ca-a2889fcdb859\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/>Die Spitz (Downstairs At The Dome, London, UK \u2013 July 10)<\/p>\n<p id=\"7171e02d-bcc3-4b30-8a18-5de20350b0aa\">The best gigs aren\u2019t about flashy production, but the exchange of energy between artists and fans. On that score, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/bands-artists\/die-spitz-something-to-consume-interview\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/bands-artists\/die-spitz-something-to-consume-interview\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Die Spitz<\/a>\u2019s first UK show was truly special. Performing two months ahead of the release of their brilliant debut album <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/music\/albums\/die-spitz-could-be-your-life\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/music\/albums\/die-spitz-could-be-your-life\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Something To Consume<\/a>, the Texan quartet lit up north London. They melded badass attitude, head-caving riffs, genuine personality and an admirable-verging-on-alarming disregard for their own safety, with vocalist\/guitarist Ellie Livingston and bassist Kate Halter both stage-diving and crowd-surfing. This is the kind of band that <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/features\/motorhead-studio-albums-ranked-worst-to-best\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/features\/motorhead-studio-albums-ranked-worst-to-best\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mot\u00f6rhead<\/a> would have brought out on tour, purely so that Lemmy could have watched them play night after night, and I can think of no higher compliment. Paul Brannigan<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-537bad5b-e05b-4157-9fb8-f11c5837d15c\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/>Trivium (Bloodstock Open Air, Derbyshire, UK \u2013 August 8)<\/p>\n<p id=\"ceaa6727-f44a-40e5-b522-355a21ba6905\"><a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/features\/trivium-story-behind-ascendancy\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/features\/trivium-story-behind-ascendancy\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ascendancy<\/a> was the first modern metal record I heard (and the album that set me on the path to\u2026 well, all of this), so seeing <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/artist\/trivium\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/artist\/trivium\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"\/artist\/trivium\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Trivium<\/a> play it in full in January was going to take some beating. But then what do they do? They <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/bands-artists\/live-performances\/trivium-crush-bloodstock-with-guest-and-hit-packed-set\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/bands-artists\/live-performances\/trivium-crush-bloodstock-with-guest-and-hit-packed-set\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">put on a masterclass in how to headline a festival<\/a>. Guest slots, covers, anthems \u2013 the Floridians delivered the lot, hammering away with an earnestness that shows they\u2019re still the metal-loving kids they were 20 years ago. I\u2019ve seen some legendary performances this year, but Trivium proved a show doesn\u2019t have to be once-in-a-lifetime to be magic. That\u2019s what happened during <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/features\/green-lung-this-heathen-land\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/features\/green-lung-this-heathen-land\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Green Lung<\/a>\u2019s set at Arctangent this year. While the doomsters seemed surprised to be on a lineup typically reserved for prog bands, their self-described \u201cwell-researched lyrics on folklore\u201d, theatricality, and riffs as weighty as monoliths secured them as my gig of the year. Between swigs of red wine, the party-starting setlist and my attempts to dodge the many elbows during One For Sorrow, it couldn\u2019t have been more fun \u2013 even if I did almost re-deploy the contents of my stomach after getting bashed about in the pit. Liz Scarlett<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-87b50b23-a14f-4939-8626-c6a9656e3a1e\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/>Blackbraid (Brick By Brick, San Diego, California \u2013 September 18)<\/p>\n<p id=\"538044b8-c92f-4b3c-9498-cdccb91ed3f8\">The prospect of seeing <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/features\/meet-blackbraid-the-one-man-project-telling-native-american-stories-through-compelling-black-metal\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/features\/meet-blackbraid-the-one-man-project-telling-native-american-stories-through-compelling-black-metal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Blackbraid<\/a> kick off their new tour had me chomping at the bit, and one step into Brick By Brick confirmed I wasn\u2019t alone. The club buzzed with anticipation, bodies packed tight and eyes locked on the stage like a pre-riot staredown. I\u2019d been immersed in <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/bands-artists\/blackbraid-iii-review\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/bands-artists\/blackbraid-iii-review\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Blackbraid III<\/a> for months, but live it became something more volatile and physical. Sgah\u2019gahsow\u00e1h blew me away as a frontman: pure kinetic energy, mic stand swinging, hair flying, delivering every scream as if he were standing on the rim of a black hole. I left wrecked and exhilarated. Nothing else in 2025 came close. Joe Daly<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-fcb0ed7b-1b2e-4be3-8353-304392a5148c\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/>Lowen (The Underworld, London, UK \u2013 December 4)<\/p>\n<p id=\"4a3292b4-a5bb-4a41-ae19-6004b9566e64\">In their last hurrah before they disappear to cook up a new record, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/features\/how-lowen-carved-out-their-own-space-from-exile\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/features\/how-lowen-carved-out-their-own-space-from-exile\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Lowen<\/a> decided to <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/reviews\/lowen-live-review-underworld-london-2025\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/reviews\/lowen-live-review-underworld-london-2025\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">blow the bloody doors off of The Underworld in Camden Town<\/a>. The stage was laden with Persian fineries, including beautiful carpets and exotic plants atop amps. The setlist was a blistering tour of their work so far, and vocalist Nina Saedi was in spellbinding form. And did I mentioned the belly dancers wiggling in time with the tempestuous music? I\u2019ve seen Lowen play many shows since the early days, but this one marked their apotheosis as a band. Amazing. Kiarash Golshani<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-3003f9a8-eca5-49a1-9f20-6246f69a127f\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/>Gojira (LDLC Arena, Lyon, France \u2013 December 10)<\/p>\n<p id=\"fa231256-dda7-4dd0-abef-120f602e558b\">The second I saw the setlist that <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/features\/gojira-interviiew-fortitude-joe-mario-duplantier\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/features\/gojira-interviiew-fortitude-joe-mario-duplantier\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gojira<\/a> had on their French tour, I started packing my bags. The extreme metal titans were celebrating 20 years of fan-favourite album From Mars To Sirius by dusting off some long-untouched deep cuts, so I knew I was in for a spectacle, but even then what I experienced blew my mind. As well as my favourite band playing gems I never thought I\u2019d hear live, there were <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/news\/gojira-bring-flying-whale-to-paris-concert-2025\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/news\/gojira-bring-flying-whale-to-paris-concert-2025\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">literal flying whales circling the arena<\/a> and enough blasts of pyro to raze the city of Lyon. It was a nonstop extravaganza: easily the best gig of the year, if not my life.
