Just over a year ago, Apple TV released and then fairly quickly cancelled the TV series adaptation of filmmaker Terry Gilliam\u2019s acclaimed 1983 feature \u201cTime Bandits\u201d.<\/p>\n

Jemaine Clement and his fellow \u201cWhat We Do in the Shadows\u201d creators Taika Waititi and Iain Morris created the series, which follows an 11-year-old history geek named Kevin (Kal-El Tuck) as he journeys through the centuries with a ragtag group of thieves.<\/p>\n

Viewing figures for the series weren\u2019t made publicly available, but the show didn\u2019t break into Nielsen\u2019s top 10 original streaming series during its run.<\/p>\n

One issue the film faced is that the original was partly famous for its memorable cast of dwarf characters and actors \u2013 something the new one skipped altogether with this reimagining involving a crew of regularly sized individuals.<\/p>\n

Speaking with La Repubblica<\/a> (via World of Reel<\/a>), Gilliam suggests that\u2019s the main reason for the cancellation and says he wasn\u2019t told about this \u201cabsurd\u201d change until it was too late:<\/p>\n

\u201cThey kept it from me for months that there were no dwarves in the series \u2013 something I consider structural to that story. When I found out, it was too late, and that\u2019s why the series failed.<\/p>\n

They brought me in as a non-writing executive producer, and I thought I had a bit of control, but when I read the scripts, I didn\u2019t like them. Taika Waititi, the director whose \u2018Jojo Rabbit\u2019 I loved and to whom I thought I was handing the project, wasn\u2019t really involved; his subsequent films were disappointing.\u201d<\/p>\n
