A former St Helens centre who can count Salford as another of his former club\u2019s will come out of retirement to play in an ex-teammate\u2019s testimonial.<\/p>\n
Steve Tyrer started his career with St Helens but made his mark at Halifax, playing for the club for eight seasons and making over 200 appearances and it\u2019s now confirmed that he\u2019ll put the boots back on for the first time since 2022.<\/p>\n
Tryer ended his playing career in 2022 when he retired after a two-year spell with Widnes, but he\u2019s now set to play in former Halifax teammate James Saltonstall\u2019s<\/a> testimonial match in January.<\/p>\n He won\u2019t be the only retired player taking to the field for one last time with Fax previously announcing that former player Scott Murrell would take part in next month\u2019s game<\/a> when Halifax play Rochdale Hornets.<\/p>\n That game, slated for the first Sunday of January, will be a must-watch for Halifax fans.<\/p>\n Steve Tyrer to make playing return in testimonial<\/p>\n News of Tyrer playing in Saltonstall\u2019s testimonial was confirmed by Halifax on social media, announcing him as \u201canother Fax legend\u201d for the game.<\/p>\n They posted: \u201cSteve Tyrer will once again pull on the Famous Blue and White Hoops in support of Salty next Sunday 4th January 2026. Hall of Famer Tyrer made 217 first team appearances through nine seasons at The Shay, scoring 115 tries and 762 goals, and sits second on the clubs all time points scoring table with 1984.\u201d<\/p>\n Saltonstall played over 250 games for Fax, signing for them back in 2015 and spending a decade at the club before retiring late last year.
