From the traditional terrestrial channels to the ubiquitous streamers to the <a class=\"post_in-line_link\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/culture\/television\/youtube-future-tv-12-best-free-channels-to-watch-3484373?ico=in-line_link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">rise of YouTube<\/a>, the choice is immense \u2013 and going to get even more overwhelming with the launch of <a class=\"post_in-line_link\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/news\/friends-on-hbo-max-uk-launch-leaving-netflix-4090654?srsltid=AfmBOooPOgQf5Y5QpC_oQfeTRA7WISrxpZ2pX9Yk8GXWmMNmD3q3TiTT&amp;ico=in-line_link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">HBO Max<\/a> next year. How are you supposed to know what is worth your time and what will end up a damp squib? Give it a go and hope for the best?<\/p>\n<p>Nine times out of 10, you\u2019re setting yourself up for disappointment. But every so often you\u2019ll find a hidden gem, a series you thought everyone would be shouting about from the rooftops, but for some unknown reason, seems to have slipped under the radar.<\/p>\n<p>Watching as much television as I do, that happens quite a lot, and I often find myself begging people to join me in giving the less popular series a go. Now, I\u2019m asking you to do the same. Based on Paris Lee\u2019s brilliant 2021 memoir of the same name, this raucous, captivating drama follows Byron (Ellis Howard), a young person discovering themselves \u2013 and their gender identity \u2013 in 2000s Nottingham. In this <a class=\"post_in-line_link\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/culture\/television\/unforgivable-review-dares-feel-sorry-paedophile-3820297?srsltid=AfmBOopLXt7-3W1lieCTl26v6QhjaE3SGu4b3lJXL7NKtv3FQOuv_eM6&amp;ico=in-line_link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">one-off drama<\/a>, we meet the Mitchell family, who are learning to cope with the aftermath of learning about the sexual abuse one family member inflicted on another \u2013 a situation that only gets more complicated when the perpetrator is released from prison. Starring David Threlfall, <a class=\"post_in-line_link\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/inews-lifestyle\/anna-maxwell-martin-grief-hoodwinks-ok-suddenly-not-4079196?srsltid=AfmBOop9ieM2bJrSJTkHaUxbq59qNKB42nh4GvFGCiDF4ZG1gRoWOqIR&amp;ico=in-line_link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Anna Maxwell Martin<\/a> and Anna Friel, it\u2019s a challenging, heartbreaking and powerful programme. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/iplayer\/episodes\/m002g7zb\/unforgivable\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Streaming on BBC iPlayer<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Get Millie Black  <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"507\" width=\"760\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/SEI_242737436.jpg\" alt=\"Millie-Jean Black - (Tamara Lawrence)\" class=\"wp-image-3569580\"  \/>Tamara Lawrence as Millie-Jean Black (Photo: Fernandez Hevia\/Channel 4\/HBO)<\/p>\n<p>Police procedurals are far too common on TV, so you\u2019d be forgiven for avoiding Channel 4\u2019s <a class=\"post_in-line_link\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/culture\/television\/get-millie-black-review-police-procedurals-stale-welcome-change-3565077?srsltid=AfmBOoo8yBO3YW0QST4ikdR7J63EdKit92L3zyU1H8VJewj8uIbfJn59&amp;ico=in-line_link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Get Millie Black<\/a> when it arrived in March. But it\u2019s a mistake worth correcting, as this is certainly no cosy Death in Paradise. No wonder ITV went ahead and turned it into a full series, with Danny Dyer, Gary Lineker, <a class=\"post_in-line_link\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/culture\/music\/jade-sticks-two-fingers-up-simon-cowell-debut-solo-album-3909406?srsltid=AfmBOopbirCCLZCAtLFkn_w4dddgL-Wv1uJG2a9n00CXv2zh1k5f6HNe&amp;ico=in-line_link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jade<\/a> and <a class=\"post_in-line_link\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/culture\/television\/david-tennant-10-best-performances-3956240?srsltid=AfmBOopKH_hEQIo6j8FHWjumizqFSJCjN5XvPSOUHhNKtRl9UeAbZHiP&amp;ico=in-line_link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">David Tennant<\/a> all taking their place in the hot seat.<\/p>\n<p>Whether its Dyer sharing his journey to sobriety, Jade talking about her old band Little Mix or Harry Potter actor Tennant tackling the tricky question of JK Rowling\u2019s transphobia, these chats are as revealing as you\u2019d hope \u2013 but it\u2019s the questioners who prove the real stars. Even better, these episodes are so short that you can get through them all in just one afternoon. In this quietly hilarious series, they play siblings Tionne, Tiana and Tanika, whose lives are turned upside down by the disappearance of their mum. <\/p>\n<p>To avoid getting social services involved, they decide to keep the fact that they\u2019re now living alone a secret, reminding each other to just act normal. No problem \u2013 until a drug dealer shows up, demanding money their mother supposedly owed him. The Johnson family finally seems to have settled down \u2013 Josie (Sadler) is in art school, Billie (scene-stealer Lizzie Davidson) is falling in love and Deb (Louise Brealey) is about to move in with her boyfriend. Then everything quickly, hilariously falls apart.<\/p>\n<p>Taking on themes of sexuality, mental health and strained family relationships is difficult enough; it\u2019s even harder to make them laugh-a-minute. But for some reason, it didn\u2019t get the traction it deserved. Time to change that! <\/p>\n<p>Set in the stunning Yorkshire town of Hebden Bridge, it follows a group of middle-aged women who channel their frustrations over feeling invisible into creating a punk band. As with all Wainwright shows, there is a dark undercurrent to Riot Women \u2013 but there\u2019s also plenty of joy (and great music) to balance out the misery. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/iplayer\/episodes\/m002hd7x\/riot-women\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Streaming on BBC iPlayer<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Mitchell and Webb Are Not Helping  <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"507\" width=\"760\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/SEI_263416680.jpg\" alt=\"How Is This A Step Forward? Pictured: David Mitchell, and Robert Webb\" class=\"wp-image-4126087\"  \/>David Mitchell and Robert Webb (Photo: Lara Cornell\/Channel 4)<\/p>\n<p>There was a lot riding on <a class=\"post_in-line_link\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/culture\/television\/david-mitchell-interview-bbc-dismembered-outsiders-1959483?srsltid=AfmBOoqrJCqAi0TCqRAvDF22mfgLIFSSTbWsPMgl2FLcXTOPJS3eg42B&amp;ico=in-line_link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">David Mitchell<\/a> and Robert Webb\u2019s return to sketch comedy \u2013 not only did they have to be funny, but it felt as though the future of the entire medium rested on their shoulders. Luckily, <a class=\"post_in-line_link\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/culture\/television\/mitchell-webb-review-ushering-new-era-sketch-comedy-3900793?srsltid=AfmBOoosqHXziz7ueG5BhAcOSdp0t-NUi9GXeCV51CHODj8Hct1PSmnB&amp;ico=in-line_link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">they pulled it off<\/a> \u2013 with the help of (and sometimes despite) fresher faces <a class=\"post_in-line_link\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/culture\/television\/kiell-smith-bynoe-i-dont-understand-why-they-asked-me-to-host-sewing-bee-3061207?srsltid=AfmBOoqWXXvAkYVlj5skRE19o5k7Pa7iEjnkGZwOrqt461Qa1jVGnoUR&amp;ico=in-line_link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kiell Smith-Bynoe<\/a>, Stevie Martin, Krystal Evans and Lara Ricote in the writing room. <\/p>\n<p>Highlights include the Aussie soap in which the characters can\u2019t help but swear, a parody of the multiple former Prince Andrew interview dramas and so-dull-it\u2019s-funny \u201cMiddle Aged Man Island\u201d. But after hearing how good the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.disneyplus.com\/browse\/entity-23c8484e-a657-440b-8bf9-678f547331ff\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">first TV series in the franchise<\/a> is, I decided to dip my toe in \u2013 and I\u2019m so glad I did.<\/p>\n<p>In the not-too distant future of 2120, businesses, rather than governments, rule the world and spend their money on experimenting on alien life forms. But when one of their spaceships crash lands on Earth, a terrifying xenomorph escapes and begins its killing spree. Alien: Earth is properly scary, and I had to watch most of it from behind a cushion, convinced that the sharp-toothed Alien was going to jump out from my TV. With a construction crew, a legion of actors, and seemingly unlimited resources, Fielder helps ordinary people prepare for life???s biggest moments by ???rehearsing??? them in carefully crafted simulations of his own design. In season two, the urgency of Fielder???s project grows as he decides to put his resources toward an issue that affects us all. After learning that most aeroplane crashes are caused by miscommunication by the captain and the first officer, Fielder sets out to set up a way for two pilots to practice. Typically of Fielder, he takes this \u201crehearsal\u201d to the nth degree, building his own replica Houston airport and hiring actors to help him with his experiment. I won\u2019t spoil the finale, but it\u2019s one of the most heart-stopping, wonderful and frankly dangerous episodes of TV I\u2019ve ever seen.
