{"id":344378,"date":"2025-12-31T09:15:08","date_gmt":"2025-12-31T09:15:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/344378\/"},"modified":"2025-12-31T09:15:08","modified_gmt":"2025-12-31T09:15:08","slug":"work-starts-on-60m-ravensthorpe-viaduct-to-speed-up-rail-trips","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/344378\/","title":{"rendered":"Work starts on \u00a360m Ravensthorpe viaduct to speed up rail trips"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The viaduct will replace two cast-iron bridges that were built by Joseph Butler &amp; Co in Leeds in 1847.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">While the Victorian bridges have been deemed no longer suitable for use, they are Grade II listed and will remain in place when the new viaduct opens.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The new nine-span structure is being manufactured from Corten steel, a high-strength material that develops a rusty brown colour and does not need continuous painting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">A 12,000-tonne crane is being used to swing each individual span into position on eight supporting pillars.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Close to the viaduct, Ravensthorpe Station has been closed by Network Rail as part of the upgrade work.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The station <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c0jee98gg7do\" class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">is being rebuilt at a nearby location<\/a> so more trains can stop there and will include a footbridge with lifts, a new forecourt and improved drop-off facilities.
