{"id":344858,"date":"2025-12-31T15:31:06","date_gmt":"2025-12-31T15:31:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/344858\/"},"modified":"2025-12-31T15:31:06","modified_gmt":"2025-12-31T15:31:06","slug":"life-is-pain-without-you-cary-elwes-and-martin-scorsese-pay-tribute-to-rob-reiner-as-autopsy-reports-sealed-movies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/344858\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Life is pain without you\u2019: Cary Elwes and Martin Scorsese pay tribute to Rob Reiner as autopsy reports sealed | Movies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">More than two weeks after the deaths of the film director <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/film\/rob-reiner\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Rob Reiner<\/a> and his photographer wife, Michele, friends and colleagues continue to pay tribute to the couple.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Writing on Instagram, Cary Elwes, who starred in Reiner\u2019s 1987 classic The Princess Bride, said he only now felt able to post publicly about his loss.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cEnough time has passed that I can finally put my grief into words,\u201d wrote Elwes, saying that the first time he met Reiner, aged 24, he \u201cfell in love with him\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cAs we began spending more time together I knew this was someone I wanted in my life. I also knew that by casting me \u2026 he was giving me the keys to the castle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The actor posted some behind-the-scenes footage from the film, adding that he could not remember \u201ca single day without laughter\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThe movie is about love, loyalty and sacrifice. Things that Rob held dear. Which is among the many reasons he was the perfect person to direct it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cAnd if I could make him laugh in return, I felt like I had won the lottery. His laugh was one of the greatest sounds I\u2019ve ever known \u2013 so heartfelt it still rings in my ears.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThis was a man who felt deeply,\u201d wrote Elwes. \u201cWhose heart was filled with love and compassion. He wasn\u2019t impressed by how much money you had or if you had a privileged upbringing. Photograph: Moviestore Collection\/Rex<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The Reiners\u2019 son, Nick, has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder after his parents bodies were discovered on 14 December in their Los Angeles home. He is being held without bail in a correctional facility in the city.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Elwes also paid tribute to Reiner\u2019s wife, saying: \u201cTo say that they were a great team would be an understatement \u2026 my heart still aches every time I think of you, I know the grief of losing you too soon will likely never go away.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">He concluded with a quote from The Princess Bride: \u201cSure, death cannot stop true love but life is pain without you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In an essay in the New York Times, Martin Scorsese also paid tribute to Reiner, who he first met in the 1970s, saying:<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cRight away, I loved hanging out with Rob. We had a natural affinity for each other. He was hilarious and sometimes bitingly funny, but he was never the kind of guy who would take over the room. He had a beautiful sense of uninhibited freedom, fully enjoying the life of the moment, and he had a great barrelling laugh.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Reiner had a supporting role in Scorsese\u2019s 2013 film The Wolf of Wall Street, in which he played the father of Leonardo DiCaprio\u2019s character, Jordan Belfort.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cHe could improvise with the best\u201d, wrote Scorsese, \u201che was a master at comedy, he worked beautifully with Leo and the rest of the guys, and he understood the human predicament of his character: The man loved his son, he was happy with his success, but he knew that he was destined for a fall.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">This week, a Los Angeles superior court judge agreed to bar the release of the Reiners\u2019 autopsy reports, at the request of the LAPD.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">A court order received by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner last week put a security hold on the cases to restrict the public release of \u201cany investigative information, notes, reports or photos\u201d related to the investigation.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018He was a master at comedy\u2019 \u2026 Rob Reiner in The Wolf of Wall Street. Photograph: Paramount Pictures\/Allstar<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The medical examiner\u2019s office <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/film\/2025\/dec\/18\/rob-and-michele-reiner-cause-of-death-determined-by-medical-examiner\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">had previously confirmed<\/a> their deaths were the result of homicide, with their public database listing the cause as \u201cmultiple sharp force injuries\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">After the Reiners\u2019 killing, President Donald Trump posted that Rob Reiner\u2019s death was \u201cdue to the anger he caused others\u201d from being outspokenly anti-Trump.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Trump called Reiner \u201ctortured and struggling\u201d and attributed his death to \u201chis massive, unyielding, and incurable affliction with a mind crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cHe was known to have driven people CRAZY by his raging obsession of President Donald J Trump, with his obvious paranoia reaching new heights as the Trump Administration surpassed all goals and expectations of greatness, and with the Golden Age of America upon us, perhaps like never before.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The president\u2019s comments <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/dec\/15\/trump-rob-reiner-reaction-truth-social\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">were widely condemned<\/a>, with Joe Rogan adding his voice to the critics last week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><a href=\"https:\/\/youtube.com\/watch?time_continue=2&amp;v=fFn4z3M6c6w&amp;embeds_referring_euri=https%3A%2F%2Fvariety.com%2F&amp;source_ve_path=Mjg2NjY\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Speaking to comedian Shane Gillis<\/a>, the hugely popular podcaster said of Trump: \u201cIf you say that privately that\u2019s one thing, which is also crazy, but it\u2019s so disappointing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Rogan, who supported Trump in 2024 but has recently expressed disquiet over some of his policies, equated the president\u2019s apparent lack of empathy with \u201cpeople that were celebrating when Charlie Kirk got shot\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cImagine if Obama tweeted something about someone after they died in this way.
