The company, with a private market capitalisation of US$500 billion, has built up a chip design unit that employed around 1,000 staff, one of the people briefed on the situation said.<\/p>\n<p>ByteDance\u2019s internal chip unit has made progress in the tape-out of a processor that matches the performance of <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/economy\/china-economy\/article\/3336100\/china-may-tap-nvidias-h200-ai-gains-domestic-chip-strategy-here-stay-analysts?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Nvidia\u2019s H20 chip<\/a>, a China-tailored chip, but at a lower cost.
