There may have been no white Christmas<\/a>, but there could be a white New Year as the Met Office<\/a> warns that an Arctic chill is coming to London.<\/p>\n The Met Office has issued yellow weather warning for snow and ice across the country.<\/p>\n Friday will see one of the coldest days, with warnings stretching from London to Manchester<\/a>, and covering Scotland and Northern Ireland<\/a>. <\/p>\n The capital will see lows of about 1\u00b0C on Friday, and up to 5cm of snow is expected in some places. <\/p>\n Weather forecaster Jim Dale told Metro that things will be getting significantly colder as we enter the New Year, with a polar vortex dislocation coming \u2018straight out of the North Pole towards us\u2019.<\/p>\n \t\t\t\tSign up for all of the latest stories\t\t\t<\/p>\n Start your day informed with Metro’s News Updates<\/a> newsletter or get Breaking News<\/a> alerts the moment it happens. <\/p>\n It will be more like \u2018the nightmare after Christmas\u2019 with widespread areas seeing snow, particularly in the North and East of the UK, he said.<\/p>\n \t\t \t\t Wintry weather would last until around January 10, he added, starting in Scotland and heading further south.<\/p>\n Other yellow weather warnings are in place from today until Sunday, mainly covering Scotland. <\/p>\n Parts of Scotland are set to see temperatures as low as -12\u00b0C, while Wales and northern England could also go as low as -7\u00b0C inland, and there will be the possibility of blizzards, with strong winds combined with snow.<\/p>\n On Monday, temperatures fell to -8.4\u00b0C at Tulloch Bridge in the Highlands, while Altnaharra had -7.2\u00b0C on Sunday.<\/p>\n By Friday morning, the Met Office is predicting 2cm to 5cm of snow, with 10cm in certain local areas and 10cm to 20cm in some areas above 200m.<\/p>\n Mr Dale, who predicted a polar vortex would hit weeks ago, said that if snow gets as far as southern England, this would likely be around January 4 or 5.<\/p>\n All this is expected to lead to significant travel disruption, as well as the happier scenes of snowmen and tobogganing.<\/p>\n The polar air will not just be affecting the UK, as it will also sweep northern and central Europe, making headlines in many other countries too. <\/p>\n The Met Office said : \u2018We\u2019ll see a transition to more unsettled and wintry conditions<\/a> into the New Year, with a snow and ice warning issued and more likely to come.<\/p>\n \u2018High pressure remains in charge over the next few days, meaning we see a continuation of the current chilly, but settled conditions.<\/p>\n \u2018Things look largely settled for many on New Year\u2019s Eve<\/a>,\u00a0but turning windy with showers in Scotland. Whether it is the latest politics news explained, live football coverage or a showbiz scoop.<\/p>\n Click here<\/a> and tick Metro.co.uk to ensure you see stories from us first in Google Search.<\/p>\n \t\t \u2018Throughout Thursday, showers will increasingly turn to snow in northern Scotland, and a strong, perhaps gale force northerly wind will also set in.<\/p>\n \u2018A\u00a0yellow national severe weather warning\u00a0for snow and ice has been issued, with some significant accumulations possible by Friday morning.\u2019<\/p>\n Meanwhile, amber and yellow cold health warnings cover the whole of England, lasting until January 5. <\/p>\n Why is it getting so cold in the New Year?<\/p>\n Met Office Deputy Chief Forecaster Mark Sidaway said: \u2018It certainly looks like we are in for a taste of \u201cwinter\u201d as we welcome in the New Year, initially in the north, but more widely across the UK for the first week of 2026.<\/p>\n \u2018Arctic<\/a> air and strong northerly winds will bring cold or very cold conditions to all parts of the UK, and it will feel especially cold in the strong winds.<\/p>\n \u2018Widespread and locally severe frosts are expected, along with the first snow of the winter for many.<\/p>\n \t\t \u2018These colder conditions and wintry hazards \u2013 snow, ice\u00a0and strong winds \u2013 will develop more widely as we enter the New Year, with more warnings for snow and ice likely. <\/p>\n \u2018It looks like this cold spell will last through at least the first week of January, so it\u2019s important people keep up to date with the latest forecast and warnings.\u2019<\/p>\n The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued an\u00a0amber cold health alert<\/a> covering the North East and North West of England until January 5.
