The \u201cAvengers: Doomsday\u201d marketing campaign continued with a Thor-centric teaser<\/a> that delighted many Marvel fans by standing in stark contrast to the divisively silly \u201cThor: Love and Thunder,\u201d the 2022 tentpole that marked Chris Hemsworth\u2019s last outing as the God of Thunder. The teary-eyed Thor who appears in the \u201cDoomsday\u201d teaser praying before battle is miles away from the wise-cracking goofball Thor became in the MCU.<\/p>\n

\u201cFather, all my life I\u2019ve answered every call, to honor, duty, to war. Now fate has given me something I never sought. A child, a life untouched by the storm,\u201d Thor says in the \u201cDoomsday\u201d theater in an ultra-serious tone. \u201cGrant me the strength of the old fathers, so that I may fight once more, defeat one more enemy, and return home to her. Not as a warrior, but as warmth, to teach her not battle, but stillness, the kind I never knew. Please father heed my word.\u201d<\/p>\n

Giving Thor his own brooding \u201cDoomsday\u201d teaser sends a clear message to Marvel fans that the superhero is changing tone for his return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While \u201cLove and Thunder\u201d earned a robust $760 million worldwide in summer 2022, it polarized fans by pushing Thor to the limit of silliness. Even Hemsworth criticized the movie, admitting in\u00a0a 2023 GQ magazine profile\u00a0<\/a>that \u201cLove and Thunder\u201d was \u201ctoo silly\u201d for its own good.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think we just had too much fun. It just became too silly,\u201d Hemsworth said about the movie. \u201cIt\u2019s always hard being in the center of it and having any real perspective\u2026I love the process, it\u2019s always a ride. But you just don\u2019t know how people are going to respond.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hemsworth said his biggest critics were his son\u2019s friends. \u201cIt\u2019s a bunch of eight-year-olds critiquing my film. \u2018We thought this one had too much humor, the action was cool but the VFX weren\u2019t as good,\u2019\u201d he said. \u201cI cringe and laugh equally at it.\u201d<\/p>\n

The actor doubled down a year later in\u00a0Vanity Fair\u2019s May 2024 issue<\/a>,\u00a0saying: \u201cI got caught up in the improv and the wackiness, and I became a parody of myself. I didn\u2019t stick the landing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hemsworth added he grew frustrated with the character while playing him in four standalone Marvel films and additional \u201cAvengers\u201d movies, explaining: \u201cSometimes I felt like a security guard for the team. I would read everyone else\u2019s lines, and go, \u2018Oh, they got way cooler stuff. They\u2019re having more fun. What\u2019s my character doing?\u2019 It was always about, \u2018You\u2019ve got the wig on. You\u2019ve got the muscles. You\u2019ve got the costume. Where\u2019s the lighting?\u2019 Yeah, I\u2019m part of this big thing, but I\u2019m probably pretty replaceable.\u201d<\/p>\n

Despite the self-criticism, Hemsworth was always clear that he wanted to give Thor another shot and gives fans the God of Thunder they deserve after the misstep of \u201cLove and Thunder.\u201d He also told\u00a0Entertainment Weekly<\/a>\u00a0in 2023 that his next Thor movie would need to be \u201cunpredictable.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t want to continue to do it until people are so exhausted that they roll their eyes when they see me come on the screen as that character,\u201d Hemsworth said \u201cIf an audience wants to see it, and if there\u2019s something that we believe is exciting and fun, then great. I\u2019ve loved being able to reinvent that character a few times. I don\u2019t have the answer yet, but I would love to try and [figure out] how we can do that again and keep it a little unpredictable.\u201d<\/p>\n
