\u201cWhat else should I be?\u201d Kurt Cobain<\/a> asks, in the opening line of \u2018All Apologies\u2019, Nirvana\u2019s final single before his passing in 1994.<\/p>\n

The lyrics had been ruminating in Cobain\u2019s mind for years, having initially written \u2018All Apologies\u2019 on a 4-track in his shared apartment with Dave Grohl in Olympia, Washington, in 1990. \u201cI remember hearing it and thinking, \u2018God, this guy has such a beautiful sense of melody, I can\u2019t believe he\u2019s screaming all the time,\u2019\u201d Grohl once recalled to Harp magazine. <\/p>\n

Indeed, \u2018All Apologies\u2019 was a sonic change for Cobain, shifting from the sludged guitars and belting screams he was accustomed to. But the lyrical content stayed true to Cobain\u2019s vulnerability. His manager, Danny Goldberg, wrote in his memoir that Cobain played The Beatles\u2019 \u2018Norwegian Wood\u2019 on repeat for hours while he wrote the song, and its contemplative tone shows in the way that Cobain chose to communicate with a quieter, ethereal voice.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Wanting to contrast the more polished production that Butch Vig adopted while producing Nirvana\u2019s Nevermind<\/a>, Cobain favoured producer Steve Albini\u2019s approach, which was to record the band in a stripped-back, raw format. This mirrored Cobain\u2019s songwriting, as he wanted to expand into various realms of songwriting that he had not previously explored. The outcome, In Utero, would be Nirvana\u2019s most personal work yet, and, despite Cobain claiming that its lyrics were \u201cvery impersonal\u201d, the allusions to his inner turmoil were undeniable, amplified by the abrasive production.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Nirvana\u2019s label, David Geffen Company, and their management were displeased with In Utero\u2019s final output<\/a>, placing the blame on Albini, forcing the eventual compromise of remixing versions of \u2018All Apologies\u2019 and \u2018Heart-Shaped Box\u2019 with producer Scott Litt, known for his work with REM. Still, Nirvana stood by In Utero and, even when Cobain second-guessed their approach, the songs continued to resonate. <\/p>\n

\u201cI can\u2019t help myself,\u201d he told biographer Michael Azerrad in the book Come As You Are: The Story of Nirvana. \u201cI\u2019m just putting out a record I would like to listen to at home.\u201d<\/p>\n

Across the songs that comprise In Utero, Cobain considers his sprawling thoughts on his afflictions: fame, self-image, control, addiction and more. \u2018All Apologies\u2019 continues to tackle his conflicting emotions. \u201cWhat else could I say? Everyone is gay,\u201d he posits, as if daring to provoke before countering it with humility, singing, \u201cWhat else could I write? I don\u2019t have the right\u201d. Cobain continues to spiral in his own mind, contemplating the shame and discomfort that envelop him, yearning for an escape.<\/p>\n

\u201cI wish I was like you, easily amused,\u201d Cobain admits, before he laments, \u201cEverything is my fault,\u201d promising to take the blame for every wrongdoing that continues to follow him. The choruses offer a reprieve for Cobain as he sings, \u201cIn the sun, I feel as one,\u201d with a dramatic clash of instruments that breaks through the sadness. <\/p>\n

During Nirvana\u2019s performance at the Reading Festival on August 30th, 1992, Cobain dedicated \u2018All Apologies\u2019 to his wife, Courtney Love,<\/a> and their daughter, Frances Bean. \u201cI like to think the song is for them,\u201d he told Azerrad, \u201cbut the words don\u2019t really fit in relation to us\u2026 the feeling does, but not the lyrics,\u201d describing the song\u2019s tone as \u201cpeaceful, happy, comfort \u2013 just happy happiness\u201d.<\/p>\n

With gorgeous cello from Kera Schaley, a friend of Albini\u2019s, \u2018All Apologies\u2019 swells with sentimentality, turning the song into a welcome contrast to others on the album that were founded on aggression. In a similar way to \u2018Dumb\u2019, \u2018All Apologies\u2019 has a lighter tone that, even with its solemn lyrics, reverberates with a sense of comfort. The haunting final chant of \u201cAll in all is all we are\u201d fades into a shaky cry.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
