BIRCH BAY, Wash. \u2014 Thousands of people in Birch Bay are braving the cold on Thursday and trying to set a world record. <\/p>\n

The Birch Bay Chamber of Commerce, Blaine Birch Bay Park and Recreation District 2, and Bellingham Whatcom County Tourism are trying to set a record for the largest Polar Bear Dip in the world. <\/p>\n

The GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS\u2122 attempt<\/a> is happening at noon on New Year\u2019s Day. <\/p>\n

Over the weekend, the previous record held by Most, Czech Republic, with 2,461 participants \u2014was officially broken in Norway by a group of very brave and very cold plungers. <\/p>\n

The new record to beat is now 3,134 participants.<\/p>\n

\u201cSure, the bar has been raised \u2013 but that only makes the challenge more exciting. Birch Bay isn\u2019t aiming for \u201cpretty good,\u201d the goal is legendary,\u201d a release from the chamber of commerce stated. <\/p>\n

This will be Birch Bay\u2019s 43rd Annual Polar Bear Plunge. <\/p>\n

Here are the GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS\u2122 Guidelines that participants need to follow:<\/p>\n

Wear a swimming suit & shoesNo costumes, wetsuits, or drysuitsEnter the water when directedRemain waist-deep in the water for 60 secondsExit the water when directed<\/p>\n

The record still needs to be counted, and results will be released in the coming days. <\/p>\n
