\u201cI\u2019ve never had a problem with drugs,\u201d Keith Richards once said, \u201cI\u2019ve had a problem with police\u201d. This trifling line is more than a mere quip; sex, drugs and rock \u2018n\u2019 roll became part of the iconography of The Rolling Stones<\/a> from the off.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The band realised ahead of many of their peers that counterculture required its sacraments, and they were more than happy to define them. Embodying a caricature of the liberation of the era that spawned them, Mick Jagger famously said, \u201cYou start out playing rock \u2018n\u2019 roll so you can have sex and do drugs. But you end up doing drugs so you can still play rock \u2018n\u2019 roll and have sex.\u201d<\/p>\n

As a result, during the first part of that paradigm, the band were often locked up. They became the outlaws of the scene. More often than not, this was decent marketing, with the exception of Altamont when the media turned against them after things went too far. However, by and large, the arrests simply precluded a consistent work ethic. So, it came to a point when they even had to start working from jail.<\/p>\n

In June 1967, Mick Jagger, a very famous face by this point, was thrown into Brixton prison on drug charges. Feeling drained by the exacerbating situation as things began to step one toke over the line, he longed for home. You see, even drug-addled rock stars crave comfort. So, one night, in a state of despair behind bars, he penned the classic track, \u20182000 Light Years from Home\u2019.<\/p>\n

Jagger had been found guilty of possessing Benzedrine. He was slapped with the hefty and downright terrifying sentence of three months. No celebrity circumvents were offered. Facing up to this horrible fate, he turned to creativity to try and quell the mounting stress of seeing his band in tatters and his own fate faring even worse.\u00a0<\/p>\n

So, when he was released on bail the next day, the fact he was free came with the added bonus that he now had potentially the best track from their forthcoming sixth album, Their Satanic Majesties Request, up his sleeve to boot. It was edgy, poignant, and came with the critical backstory that it was quite literally born behind bars.<\/p>\n

In a manner akin to David Bowie\u2019s \u2018Space Oddity\u2019, the briefly jailed Jagger used the metaphor of an astronaut adrift to explain the sense of isolation his own slide towards darkness entailed. Borrowing motifs from Arthur C Clarke\u2019s The Sentinel, this tapped into the culture of the times at large by playing into the space race and the rapid whirlwind that society had become.\u00a0<\/p>\n

And finally, there is even the meta flourish that the whole thing has flourishes of a Benzedrine trip, codifying the source of his own downfall in the song. It is surging but also strangely sedate, something that a fair few Benzedrine users would recognise as reflective of a heady trip.<\/p>\n

While Richards would go on to call Satanic Majesties a \u201cload of shit<\/a>\u201c, this track proves that the problem wasn\u2019t the psychedelic incursion but rather that the other tracks lacked the sincerity displayed here. As he would explain in his memoir, \u201cNone of us wanted to make [Satanic Majesties], but it was time for another Stones album, and Sgt. Pepper\u2019s was coming out, so we thought basically we were doing a put-on.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

That\u2019s not a great way to approach a record, but any song written in a cell is bound to be of interest. And \u20182000 Light Years from Home\u2019 defies any notion that it is just a novelty quirk or morbid curiosity. In fact, it\u2019s a warning signal for the counterculture downfall to come.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
