But eventually, the limelight fades and the rock solid foundations it\u2019s built alongside Microsoft in the intervening years have taken a few major blows this year.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"bec5a844-1f88-4589-ae7f-50a4e0054a49-0\">Indeed, 2025 started with a big hit: DeepSeek\u2019s dramatic entrance to the global AI market. As <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.com\/technology\/artificial-intelligence\/chinese-ai-firm-deepseek-has-silicon-valley-flustered\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.com\/technology\/artificial-intelligence\/chinese-ai-firm-deepseek-has-silicon-valley-flustered\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ITPro noted at the time<\/a>, the launch of the company\u2019s R1 <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.com\/technology\/artificial-intelligence\/generative-ai-vs-large-language-models\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.com\/technology\/artificial-intelligence\/generative-ai-vs-large-language-models\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">large language model (LLM)<\/a> rocked the US tech sector, wiping $1 trillion in stock value and prompting questions about the huge costs associated with AI training.<\/p>\n<p id=\"f75d9f47-69a2-47e6-9648-53932f0a5f88\">Adding insult to injury, within the space of a week, DeepSeek R1 <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2025\/01\/27\/deepseek-displaces-chatgpt-as-the-app-stores-top-app\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2025\/01\/27\/deepseek-displaces-chatgpt-as-the-app-stores-top-app\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">overtook ChatGPT on the US App Store<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"a202207d-350f-4e86-a74b-b2e1033aec8d\">While it wasn\u2019t quite the apocalyptic scenario some industry stakeholders suggested, the incident nonetheless marked the beginning of a year fraught with challenges \u2013 and ultimately OpenAI only had itself to blame.<\/p>\n<p id=\"41d090dd-ef13-41e0-bd93-acca05dfd726\">The release of GPT-5 is a prime example here. The launch of the long-awaited AI model was <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.com\/technology\/artificial-intelligence\/openai-thought-it-hit-a-home-run-with-gpt-5-users-werent-so-keen\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.com\/technology\/artificial-intelligence\/openai-thought-it-hit-a-home-run-with-gpt-5-users-werent-so-keen\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">slammed by users<\/a> over slow responses and basic errors. The incident highlighted a deeper problem for the company: it\u2019s scrambling to release more powerful, exciting models to stay ahead of the competition \u2013 and it\u2019s failing.<\/p>\n<p id=\"91473919-eb58-489e-a3d7-d9ab778416e3\">OpenAI is now embroiled in a war of attrition with key competitors such as Google and Anthropic. The latter\u2019s models, such as <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.com\/technology\/artificial-intelligence\/anthropic-announces-claude-opus-4-5-the-new-ai-coding-frontrunner\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.com\/technology\/artificial-intelligence\/anthropic-announces-claude-opus-4-5-the-new-ai-coding-frontrunner\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Claude Opus 4.5<\/a>, have improved at a rapid pace, particularly in notable areas such as coding capabilities.<\/p>\n<p id=\"d1a20ac5-3b06-4f1b-bb7f-a147e8933917\">Google, however, is the real threat for the company and November gave us a glimpse into the scale of the challenge OpenAI faces competing with the tech giant. <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.com\/technology\/artificial-intelligence\/google-launches-flagship-gemini-3-model-and-google-antigravity-a-new-agentic-ai-development-platform\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.com\/technology\/artificial-intelligence\/google-launches-flagship-gemini-3-model-and-google-antigravity-a-new-agentic-ai-development-platform\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gemini 3 blew GPT-5 out of the water<\/a>, outperforming the model across a range of key benchmarks. While writing this, Google doubled down with the launch of Gemini 3 Flash, which is quicker and cheaper than Gemini 3 and performs better on some benchmarks.<\/p>\n<p id=\"dabf8b15-2032-4830-8f71-e00b5f4e5f63\">Compare the current situation to what went on three years ago, and the outlook isn\u2019t good for OpenAI. When ChatGPT launched, the announcement reportedly sent Google into a meltdown behind the scenes.<\/p>\n<p id=\"f1f9f581-3562-4840-ae71-e0487353da32\"><a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.com\/technology\/artificial-intelligence-ai\/369766\/google-upends-teams-to-counter-threat-chatgpt\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.com\/technology\/artificial-intelligence-ai\/369766\/google-upends-teams-to-counter-threat-chatgpt\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">CEO Sundar Pichai initiated a \u201ccode red\u201d alert<\/a>, reallocating staff and resources in a bid to push out its own AI tooling. The tech giant has been plugging away in the intervening years and that calm, collected approach appears to be paying dividends now.<\/p>\n<p id=\"12e763ac-c489-4960-8421-30aaccc9d119\">By contrast, under the direction of Altman, OpenAI has been locked in its own code red scramble in recent weeks. That desperate scramble for OpenAI may have been for nothing, with MMMU-Pro benchmarks showing Gemini 3 Flash beats GPT-5.2 on multimodal reasoning with a score of 81.2% to 79.5%.<\/p>\n<p id=\"edb79809-d0b7-46a4-9a83-afb8cbf96acf\">And so the arms race continues.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-e520e092-2592-4647-a8e0-c85903911f2e\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/>Rocky ground with Microsoft<\/p>\n<p id=\"72154ce7-d72c-4b37-a0cf-8fb0d6d9a2fd\">OpenAI\u2019s war of attrition is the least of its worries though. The company\u2019s partnership with Microsoft &#8211; to the tune of several billion dollars in investment &#8211; was the fuel that propelled it to stardom in late 2022 and early 2023. But all signs point to <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.com\/technology\/artificial-intelligence\/the-honeymoon-period-is-officially-over-for-microsoft-and-openai\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.com\/technology\/artificial-intelligence\/the-honeymoon-period-is-officially-over-for-microsoft-and-openai\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a souring relationship with the tech giant<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"d196328b-829c-4403-9ba2-60075dc41a48\"><a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.com\/technology\/artificial-intelligence\/openai-chaos-what-next-for-sam-altman-and-the-beleaguered-tech-darling\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.com\/technology\/artificial-intelligence\/openai-chaos-what-next-for-sam-altman-and-the-beleaguered-tech-darling\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sam Altman\u2019s ousting<\/a> was the first big strain on the relationship in late 2023, and since then it appears things just haven\u2019t been the same. This marked a huge blow for OpenAI, signalling Microsoft\u2019s latest shift away from exclusivity.<\/p>\n<p id=\"6ae417d8-3714-4aaf-b264-848edc4e9d8b\">On one front, OpenAI is being pushed to breaking point by Google on model development and release timelines. On the other, its longtime patron appears keen on distancing itself from the company.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-58aba9cc-db58-4d35-9255-aa89877b8e90\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/>Altman bets big on future revenue<\/p>\n<p id=\"479215b3-943e-4c9c-bc92-59b1c4427a83\">2025 was the year OpenAI became synonymous with the idea of a looming \u201cAI bubble\u201d, largely fueled by its increasingly erratic and mind-boggling spending plans.<\/p>\n<p id=\"6c2cd671-e1db-43cc-8ef8-618432d57919\">It\u2019s no secret that the company needs a monumental amount of cash to keep running, and questions have been raised repeatedly <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.com\/technology\/artificial-intelligence\/openai-could-go-bankrupt-in-12-months-if-it-doesnt-raise-some-serious-cash-but-is-the-microsoft-backed-ai-giant-too-big-to-fail\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.com\/technology\/artificial-intelligence\/openai-could-go-bankrupt-in-12-months-if-it-doesnt-raise-some-serious-cash-but-is-the-microsoft-backed-ai-giant-too-big-to-fail\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">over its ability to basically stay afloat<\/a>. This year alone the company has lined up more than $1 trillion in spending, signing megadeals <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.com\/cloud\/cloud-computing\/openai-oracle-cloud-deal-stargate\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.com\/cloud\/cloud-computing\/openai-oracle-cloud-deal-stargate\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">with Oracle<\/a>, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.com\/technology\/artificial-intelligence\/nvidia-openai-investment-100-billion\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.com\/technology\/artificial-intelligence\/nvidia-openai-investment-100-billion\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nvidia<\/a>, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.com\/technology\/artificial-intelligence\/openai-signs-another-chip-deal-this-time-with-amd\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.com\/technology\/artificial-intelligence\/openai-signs-another-chip-deal-this-time-with-amd\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">AMD<\/a>, Broadcom, and most recently <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.com\/cloud\/cloud-computing\/openai-just-signed-a-bumper-usd38bn-cloud-contract-with-aws-is-it-finally-preparing-to-cast-aside-microsoft\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.com\/cloud\/cloud-computing\/openai-just-signed-a-bumper-usd38bn-cloud-contract-with-aws-is-it-finally-preparing-to-cast-aside-microsoft\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">with Amazon Web Services (AWS)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"3ca71199-2255-4832-bc86-30b7e47104a0\">So how does it plan to pay for all this? Your guess is as good as mine. According to the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/a169703c-c4df-46d6-a2d3-4184c74bbaf7\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/a169703c-c4df-46d6-a2d3-4184c74bbaf7\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Financial Times<\/a>, roughly 70% of the company\u2019s $13bn in annual recurring revenue comes from the consumer version of ChatGPT.<\/p>\n<p id=\"3f6c559c-5edb-43ac-97da-0a4d8946b9f1\">The first objective here appears to be a significant increase in the number of paying subscribers. At present, that\u2019s just 5% of the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/openai.com\/index\/the-state-of-enterprise-ai-2025-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/openai.com\/index\/the-state-of-enterprise-ai-2025-report\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">800 million users globally<\/a>. Setting this goal is one thing, actually getting them to fork out is another and seems wholly unrealistic.<\/p>\n<p id=\"398cfe97-6808-4cc7-b22d-82926202aa4f\">There\u2019s a sense that OpenAI is handcuffing itself to so many major industry players that if the worst comes to worse, it\u2019ll either drag everyone into the abyss and brick the economy, or force said providers to take drastic measures to keep it in the game.<\/p>\n<p id=\"c2cec8e1-2dce-4bcf-a853-0d1182658074\">Reports from <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/10\/07\/data-centers-gdp-growth-zero-first-half-2025-jason-furman-harvard-economist\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/10\/07\/data-centers-gdp-growth-zero-first-half-2025-jason-furman-harvard-economist\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Fortune <\/a>in October this year noted that the lion\u2019s share of US GDP growth in the first half of 2025 was fueled by investment in data centers infrastructure.
