{"id":354886,"date":"2026-01-06T09:06:08","date_gmt":"2026-01-06T09:06:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/354886\/"},"modified":"2026-01-06T09:06:08","modified_gmt":"2026-01-06T09:06:08","slug":"women-cinematographers-who-can-make-oscar-history","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/354886\/","title":{"rendered":"Women Cinematographers Who Can Make Oscar History"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThis is the first year that cinematography has been included in the <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2025\/film\/awards\/oscars-shortlist-2026-casting-score-sinners-1236610054\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Oscar shortlist<\/a>, and on the list are such familiar names as Dan Laustsen, Guillermo del Toro\u2019s go-to DP, and Robbie Ryan, who works regularly with Yorgos Lanthimos.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tBut there\u2019s a trend: three women made the cut, Autumn Durald Arkapaw (\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/sinners\/\" id=\"auto-tag_sinners\" data-tag=\"sinners\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sinners<\/a>\u201d), Alice Brooks (\u201cWicked: For Good\u201d) and Amy Vincent (\u201cSong Sung Blue\u201d).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIn the history of the category, no woman has ever won the Oscar for cinematography, and only three women have ever been nominated: Rachel Morrison in 2018 for \u201cMudbound,\u201d Ari Wegner in 2021 for \u201cThe Power of the Dog\u201d and Mandy Walker in 2022 for \u201cElvis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThis year, Arkapaw made history as the first female cinematographer to shoot on Imax 65mm and Ultra Panavision for \u201cSinners,\u201d and looks like a front-runner. With a win, she would not only be the first woman<br \/>to win the category, she would also be the first Filipina\/African American to win an Oscar for cinematography.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tArkapaw and Coogler went out to the desert near Lancaster, Calif., and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2025\/film\/news\/the-difference-between-filmed-for-imax-and-shot-with-imax-1236425200\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">tested IMAX<\/a>\u00a035mm and 65mm, with Coogler showing a keen interest in showcasing the landscape \u2014 an idea inspired by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/quentin-tarantino\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Quentin Tarantino<\/a>\u2018s \u201cThe Hateful Eight,\u201d which was shot on 65mm film using Ultra Panavision 70mm. \u201cWe screened those tests at FotoKem and the headquarters of IMAX. After you see what you created, you can\u2019t unsee that stuff,\u201d Arkapaw said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tEmotions were key to \u201cWicked\u201d and its conclusion, \u201cWicked: For Good.\u201d \u201cThe first movie would live in this effervescent daylight and the second film would be steeped in maturity and density and have a weight to it,\u201d Brooks says. \u201cAs we were designing it, \u2018Wicked: For Good\u2019 has this handmade feel to it, but it also feels textured and raw and edgy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tBrooks used every color of the rainbow to light the movie. Each scene, color meant something. \u201cRed is when you make the wrong choice. You see that in a lot in the governor\u2019s mansion. Orange is the color of Elphaba\u2019s transformation, and you see it with the flames and with \u2018No Dood Deed.&#8217;\u201d And blue, Brooks says is the color of love between the two. You first see in the Ozdust Ballroom surrounding and then you see it for the color of the moonlight in \u2018For Good.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tBut, it\u2019s going to be a tough choice for voters to whittle down the field, given the levels of achievement on display.
