With the next installment already dated and early scenes filmed, the franchise may already have a capable replacement lined up.<\/p>\n<p>James Wan wants a crack at Avatar 4 if James Cameron steps down<\/p>\n<p>In an interview with <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/screenrant.com\/james-wan-avatar-movie-director-wish-james-cameron\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">ScreenRant<\/a> during promotion for The Copenhagen Test, James Wan said, \u201cI have not done Avatar. Yeah, if you could put a good one for me with James Cameron, I\u2019d love to take a crack at that.\u201d Wan called Avatar one of the few franchises he hasn\u2019t yet been involved with and confirmed he would like an opportunity to contribute if Cameron exits.<\/p>\n<p>James Cameron, who directed Avatar: Fire and Ash, has plans for Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 but has acknowledged the possibility of stepping aside. He has stated interest in pursuing other projects, including a new Terminator film. Despite having already shot scenes for Avatar 4, Cameron has not confirmed whether he will remain as director for the upcoming installment.<\/p>\n<p>Avatar has been a major box office success under Cameron\u2019s direction. The first two films grossed $2.923 billion and $2.343 billion, respectively. Avatar: Fire and Ash has been in theaters for two weeks and is approaching $1 billion in global revenue. Disney currently lists Avatar 4 for release on December 21, 2029, with Avatar 5 scheduled for December 19, 2031.<\/p>\n<p>James Wan has directed or produced multiple blockbuster franchises, including Saw, Insidious, The Conjuring, Fast &amp; Furious, and Aquaman. The Conjuring franchise alone has earned $2.8 billion, making it the most successful horror series in history. His films Aquaman and Furious 7 both exceeded $1 billion at the global box office.
