{"id":358099,"date":"2026-01-08T01:46:10","date_gmt":"2026-01-08T01:46:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/358099\/"},"modified":"2026-01-08T01:46:10","modified_gmt":"2026-01-08T01:46:10","slug":"snow-buntings-pictured-on-beach-at-kessingland-in-suffolk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/358099\/","title":{"rendered":"Snow buntings pictured on beach at Kessingland in Suffolk"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n  Keen wildlife photographer Barry Buttle braved the cold to head outside on Tuesday afternoon.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  He was lucky enough to find a flock of snow buntings at Kessingland beach.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <img   width=\"100%\"\/>He saw the snow buntings at Kessingland beach (Image: Barry Buttle)\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  He pulled out his camera and took a series of images, which show the birds perched on a log.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Mr Buttle also captured some individual birds flying and hopping around on the frosty sand.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Snow buntings are not classified as rare, but are scarce visitors to the region.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <img   width=\"100%\"\/>The species is amber-listed (Image: Barry Buttle)\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  They usually breed in the Arctic, but are known to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edp24.co.uk\/news\/20641095.jewels-north---10-migratory-birds-heading-way-winter\/?ref=ed_direct\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">spend their winters<\/a> in Scotland, the north west of England and the eastern coast.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  According to Suffolk Wildlife Trust, only a few pairs of snow buntings are known to breed locally.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  They are large for buntings, and get their name from their striking, white, &#8220;snowy&#8221; plumages.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <img   width=\"100%\"\/>They are scarce visitors to this part of the UK (Image: Barry Buttle)\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  In the summer, males are black and white, with all-white underparts which contrast their black backs and wing-tips.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Females are browner and more mottled, with streaked backs and dusky heads.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Keen wildlife photographer Barry Buttle braved the cold to head outside on Tuesday afternoon.
