Leeds finish the game in 16th place with 22 points, eight more than 18th-place West Ham.

Bruno Guimaraes scored Newcastle’s penalty and also set up a goal for Joelinton with a neat outside-of-the-boot cross. Newcastle rise into sixth place, two points outside the top four.

Newcastle finding table traction with soft spot in fixture list

The Magpies won a third-straight game out of a four-match stretch that demanded at least nine points. Eddie Howe won’t love the lack of control his men showed in much of these 270 minutes, but he got his nine points and will be favored to make it 12-for-12 against Wolves on January 18 before Newcastle begins a more challenging run of Premier League fixtures. Yes, Newcastle let Burnley back into their eventual 3-1 win at Turf Moor on December. Yes, they needed ages to break down super-shorthanded Crystal Palace at the weekend in a 2-0 win. And finally, yes, they had to come back three times to beat a promoted Leeds United side — an admittedly in-form team — at home. Newcastle are set for a brutal month and needed every single point they could over the last two weeks. They got them. Now they need to sharpen their edges.

What’s next?

Newcastle host Bournemouth in the FA Cup on Saturday, then welcome Man City to St. James’ Park in the first leg of the League Cup semifinal on Tuesday.
