{"id":358956,"date":"2026-01-08T13:03:08","date_gmt":"2026-01-08T13:03:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/358956\/"},"modified":"2026-01-08T13:03:08","modified_gmt":"2026-01-08T13:03:08","slug":"unremarkable-block-of-flats-in-london-is-hiding-a-bonkers-80s-restaurant","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/358956\/","title":{"rendered":"Unremarkable block of flats in London is hiding a \u2018bonkers\u2019 80s restaurant"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t<img fetchpriority=\"high\" width=\"646\" height=\"406\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/SEI_236790280-fd54.jpg\" class=\"article-image wp-image-22402423\" alt=\"Oslo Court flats in St John's Wood\" decoding=\"sync\"\/><br \/>\n\t\tThis block of flats from the 1930s has an incredible hidden feature inside (Picture: Google)<\/p>\n<p>If you were to take the Tube to St John\u2019s Wood station, head down Wellington Road towards <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/london\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Regent\u2019s Park<\/a>, then turn left onto Prince Albert Road, eventually you\u2019d come across Oslo Court.<\/p>\n<p>From the outside, it\u2019s a rather unremarkable-looking <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/lifestyle\/property\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">block of flats,<\/a> designed by architect Robert Atkinson in the 1930s.<\/p>\n<p>It contains 125 one-bedroom apartments and is hiding a very unexpected feature \u2013 a <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/restaurant-reviews\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">restaurant<\/a> on the ground floor that visitors say feels as if it\u2019s <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/80s-nostalgia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">\u2018stuck in a time warp\u2019.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Oslo Court Restaurant was launched by Tony and Jose Sanchez in 1982 and remains a family restaurant, serving <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/01\/14\/worlds-worst-food-dishes-revealed-including-a-uk-classic-22356721\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">classic dishes from another era,<\/a> including melba toast, <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/lifestyle\/food\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">deep-fried mushrooms<\/a>, lobster bisque, melon and Parma ham, lamb cutlets, halibut, pavlova, and cr\u00eapes suzette.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"431\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/GettyImages-1186264878.jpg\" class=\"article-image wp-image-22401975\" alt=\"Oslo Court Restaurant Regents Park London\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"\/><br \/>\n\t\tSome say the restaurant is \u2018stuck in a time warp\u2019 (Picture: In Pictures via Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p>Tony, who was born in Galicia, Northern <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/spain\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Spain<\/a>, trained as a chef in Geneva before moving to the UK in 1968. This is all paired with blue velvet bucket chairs and a deep blue fitted carpet.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Waiters wearing black ties charm you throughout your meal, and one member of staff, Neil Heshmat, has been working there since its opening, doing such a slap-up job that he was named Britain\u2019s most-loved waiter in 2021. <\/p>\n<p>Everything is very traditional, with staff jotting down orders using a pen and notepad, and bringing around a dessert trolley at the end of the meal.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"838\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/SEI_236790415-4c95.jpg\" class=\"article-image wp-image-22402420\" alt=\"Oslo Court Restaurant\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"\/><br \/>\n\t\tThe food is straight out of the 80s, with melba toast, lobster bisque and pavlova on the menu (Picture: Google)<\/p>\n<p>As we\u2019ve ascertained, the menu is similarly old-school, serving up classics from the 80s for lunch and dinner. Customers can choose from a set menu for their food, and this includes several courses and plenty of side dishes for \u00a350 per person for lunch, and \u00a359.50 per person for dinner.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>There are a few extra charges, including a \u00a33.50 cover charge and a 10% service charge that will be added to the bill at the end, and it\u2019s also worth noting that a few of the main meal options have \u2018supplement\u2019 prices.<\/p>\n<p>And when it comes to <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/drinks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">drinks<\/a>, there\u2019s a wine list but no cocktail menu \u2013 but the bartender is reportedly able to whip you up a drink of your choosing. <\/p>\n<p>Many guests like to go for a classic martini, served with two olives on a cocktail stick.<\/p>\n<p>While you might not expect much from looking at Oslo Court Restaurant, reviews online suggest it\u2019s a really brilliant place to eat at, albeit a little quirky.<\/p>\n<p>Food writer and podcaster, Henry Southan (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DFA_70GoxL3\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">@iamhenrysouthan<\/a>), previously visited and captured the experience in an Instagram reel, which went viral on social media, garnering more than 71,000 likes. <\/p>\n<p>The foodie branded the restaurant \u2018absolutely bonkers\u2019 after witnessing a bar mitzvah and several birthdays taking place during the meal.<\/p>\n<p>He praised the \u2018delicious\u2019 lobster bisque and veal chop, revealed that Neil is still very much there and still very much the \u2018star of the show\u2019, and claimed that in a world of sleek, minimalist restaurants, Oslo Court is a \u2018welcome throwback to simpler times\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018We were feeling a bit delirious by the end, but I can\u2019t get this place out of my head,\u2019 Henry proclaims as he leaves the restaurant.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, on TikTok, foodie Chris Savva shared a review and hailed Oslo Court a \u2018hidden gem\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018You\u2019d never guess a restaurant was here,\u2019 he tells viewers. \u2018But the moment you step inside, you\u2019re welcomed into a plush dining room, which I doubt has changed much since the 70s. I loved it.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Chris was a big fan of the \u2018velvety\u2019 creamy aioli served with a crudit\u00e9 platter, as well as the melba toast. He also enjoyed \u2018perfectly cooked\u2019 king scallops wrapped in bacon, and crispy roast duck with a cherry sauce.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I savoured every bite,\u2019 he adds.<\/p>\n<p>Posts on Tripadvisor share similar sentiments. Brian M described it as a \u2018glimpse of years gone by\u2019, saying it was a \u2018gloriously decadent restaurant\u2019 that offers \u2018fair value\u2019, while Kirsty M highlighted that \u2018kindness exudes from this place as soon as you arrive\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>She continued: \u2018Beautifully presented, a snapshot from a wonderful time in food and dining (you had to be there). The service is beyond exemplary, and the food utterly divine.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I\u2019ve lived in London for 36 years, and this place shot straight on to my favourites list, and that is a competitive list.
