There was still plenty of delightful CES weirdness in the form InWin&#8217;s fresh signature chassis that looks <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/hardware\/pc-cases\/inwins-latest-signature-case-looks-not-unlike-a-futuristic-egg-but-requires-more-than-a-simple-crack-to-open\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/hardware\/pc-cases\/inwins-latest-signature-case-looks-not-unlike-a-futuristic-egg-but-requires-more-than-a-simple-crack-to-open\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">not unlike a futuristic glass egg<\/a>, as well as <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/hardware\/gaming-laptops\/lenovos-latest-rollable-screen-concept-laptop-has-finally-got-its-rolly-polly-the-right-way-around\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/hardware\/gaming-laptops\/lenovos-latest-rollable-screen-concept-laptop-has-finally-got-its-rolly-polly-the-right-way-around\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">yet another rollable laptop concept machine from Lenovo<\/a>. I&#8217;d also be remiss if I didn&#8217;t mention at least one questionable consumer doo-dad too, such as <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lollipopstar.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.lollipopstar.com\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Lollipopstar<\/a>, a lollipop that attempts to turn &#8220;candy into a concert in your mouth.&#8221; No, I will not be elaborating further.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"62ddec58-9189-4af7-b6fd-c54e665443a1-1\">But, even setting aside the hours our poor Andy spent <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/hardware\/gaming-laptops\/lenovos-las-vegas-sphere-event-delivered-an-absolute-barrage-of-ai-announcements-but-at-least-we-got-this-err-fifa-themed-legion-gaming-laptop\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/hardware\/gaming-laptops\/lenovos-las-vegas-sphere-event-delivered-an-absolute-barrage-of-ai-announcements-but-at-least-we-got-this-err-fifa-themed-legion-gaming-laptop\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">locked inside Lenovo&#8217;s AI sphere of despair<\/a>, a number of exhibitors at this year&#8217;s CES focussed on AI. Gigabyte is among the most obvious examples; united under the banner of &#8216;<a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/software\/ai\/gigabyte-loudly-and-proudly-declares-its-ai-forward-at-ces-2026\/#viafoura-comments\" target=\"_blank\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/software\/ai\/gigabyte-loudly-and-proudly-declares-its-ai-forward-at-ces-2026\/#viafoura-comments\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">AI Forward<\/a>&#8216;, Gigabyte dedicated exhibition floor space to both local AI development offerings in the form of its AI Top series, alongside server hardware like its modular &#8220;one-stop AI data center solution&#8221; the Gigapod. That&#8217;s already a lot of enterprise-geared hardware at a consumer tradeshow, but that&#8217;s not all that ground my gears at CES this year.<\/p>\n<p>Related articles<\/p>\n<p>Surprising perhaps no one, both AMD and Nvidia were also <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/hardware\/processors\/amd-and-nvidia-talking-up-local-ai-for-consumers-could-be-bad-news-for-those-chatgpt-subscriptions-but-good-news-for-us-pc-gamers\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/hardware\/processors\/amd-and-nvidia-talking-up-local-ai-for-consumers-could-be-bad-news-for-those-chatgpt-subscriptions-but-good-news-for-us-pc-gamers\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">talking up local AI solutions geared towards consumers<\/a>. Cloud-based AI is still swimming in money thanks to <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/software\/ai\/big-ai-companies-and-the-people-that-supply-big-ai-companies-are-once-again-investing-billions-of-dollars-in-one-another-this-time-nvidia-microsoft-and-anthropic\/\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/software\/ai\/big-ai-companies-and-the-people-that-supply-big-ai-companies-are-once-again-investing-billions-of-dollars-in-one-another-this-time-nvidia-microsoft-and-anthropic\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">various<\/a> <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/software\/ai\/nvidia-plans-to-splash-openai-with-cash-pouring-out-usd100-billion-for-chatgpts-creator-and-making-last-weeks-intel-investment-look-like-a-drop-in-the-money-bucket\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/software\/ai\/nvidia-plans-to-splash-openai-with-cash-pouring-out-usd100-billion-for-chatgpts-creator-and-making-last-weeks-intel-investment-look-like-a-drop-in-the-money-bucket\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">partnerships<\/a>, but it makes sense that both companies would also be looking to put tidy nest eggs into AI running locally from a device that, say, runs off their consumer grade hardware. That said, there is something about all of the local AI talk at CES 2026 that sounded ever so slightly desperate to me.<\/p>\n<p><a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/software\/ai\/amds-lisa-su-doesnt-believe-theres-an-ai-bubble-emphatically-from-my-perspective-no\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/software\/ai\/amds-lisa-su-doesnt-believe-theres-an-ai-bubble-emphatically-from-my-perspective-no\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">AMD&#8217;s Lisa Su<\/a> and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/software\/ai\/this-is-a-race-towards-who-can-get-more-and-more-of-the-worlds-7-5-billion-people-to-become-subscribers-ibms-ceo-says-the-ai-industry-isnt-a-bubble\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/software\/ai\/this-is-a-race-towards-who-can-get-more-and-more-of-the-worlds-7-5-billion-people-to-become-subscribers-ibms-ceo-says-the-ai-industry-isnt-a-bubble\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">IBM&#8217;s Arvind Krishna<\/a> say that there is no AI bubble, but there&#8217;s a reason <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/features\/2025-10-07\/openai-s-nvidia-amd-deals-boost-1-trillion-ai-boom-with-circular-deals\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/features\/2025-10-07\/openai-s-nvidia-amd-deals-boost-1-trillion-ai-boom-with-circular-deals\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Bloomberg made its graphic charting recent AI investments<\/a> look ever so circular. Long story short, the AI industry is currently staring down the challenge of creating a &#8216;killer app&#8217; or feature that consumers will want to spend money on. Without that special something funnelling revenue back into the industry, it may go out with a bang <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/software\/ai\/fabulous-news-everyone-market-analyst-says-the-ai-bubble-is-17x-bigger-than-the-dotcom-goldrush-and-4x-larger-than-the-subprime-bubble-that-caused-the-2008-crash\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/software\/ai\/fabulous-news-everyone-market-analyst-says-the-ai-bubble-is-17x-bigger-than-the-dotcom-goldrush-and-4x-larger-than-the-subprime-bubble-that-caused-the-2008-crash\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">potentially four times louder than the subprime bubble burst that caused the 2008 crash<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"vanilla-image-block\" style=\"padding-top:56.25%;\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/vQdZmk9mykhx4sNiRoJos3.png\" alt=\"The Project AVA desk companion from Razer sits atop a black desk. To echo our Jacob&#8217;s feature, &#8216;<a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/hardware\/who-asked-for-this-pc-gamers-left-wondering-after-ai-takes-center-stage-at-ces-2026\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/hardware\/who-asked-for-this-pc-gamers-left-wondering-after-ai-takes-center-stage-at-ces-2026\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">who asked for this?<\/a>&#8216; What practical advice can an LLM with no body give a plus size girlie like me? I&#8217;d rather seek out another plus size human than ask a holographic avatar &#8216;Is this too much or not enough?&#8217; But besides my anecdotal objections, some of the major players are also taking note of lacking consumer appetite.<\/p>\n<p id=\"1fb67597-1546-494a-9871-32dcd4f9442a\">Following <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/hardware\/dells-ces-2026-chat-was-the-most-pleasingly-un-ai-briefing-ive-had-in-maybe-5-years\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/hardware\/dells-ces-2026-chat-was-the-most-pleasingly-un-ai-briefing-ive-had-in-maybe-5-years\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">a surprisingly AI-lite CES 2026 presentation from Dell<\/a>, head of product Kevin Terwilliger said during the Q &amp; A session, &#8220;What we&#8217;ve learned over the course of this year, especially from a consumer perspective, is they&#8217;re not buying based on AI. In fact I think AI probably confuses them more than it helps them understand a specific outcome.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">Keep up to date with the most important stories and the best deals, as picked by the PC Gamer team.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, someone said it. For a start, I&#8217;ve been saying <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/software\/ai\/we-need-a-better-name-for-ai-or-we-risk-talking-past-each-other-until-actually-intelligent-agi-comes-home-mooing\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/software\/ai\/we-need-a-better-name-for-ai-or-we-risk-talking-past-each-other-until-actually-intelligent-agi-comes-home-mooing\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">we need a better name for AI<\/a> for ages (I&#8217;m still quite fond of my sister&#8217;s suggestion &#8216;Regurgitated Intelligence,&#8217; but let&#8217;s move on). For one thing, the current name vastly oversells the machine learning tech&#8217;s capabilities. For another, much of the popular conversation scoops up everything from chatbots based on Large Language Models, to medical research tools and even in-game enemy behaviour and crams it into the &#8216;get-along&#8217; shirt of AI\u2014no wonder some consumers are confused.<\/p>\n<p>The fact of the matter is that only sickos really want a machine that can thrash against a 235 B parameter AI model (our Dave would personally recommend the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/hardware\/gaming-pcs\/framework-desktop-pc-review\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/hardware\/gaming-pcs\/framework-desktop-pc-review\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Framework Desktop PC<\/a>, our pick for the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/hardware\/gaming-pcs\/best-mini-pcs-for-gaming\/#section-the-best-ai-mini-pc\" target=\"_blank\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/hardware\/gaming-pcs\/best-mini-pcs-for-gaming\/#section-the-best-ai-mini-pc\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">best AI Mini PC<\/a>). Well, maybe not so much big tech\u2014for example, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/hardware\/memory\/samsung-estimates-record-breaking-usd13-billion-profits-and-says-memory-apocalypse-tainted-prices-are-inevitable\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/hardware\/memory\/samsung-estimates-record-breaking-usd13-billion-profits-and-says-memory-apocalypse-tainted-prices-are-inevitable\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Samsung is already estimating it made a record-breaking $13 billion<\/a> in operating profits during Q4 of 2025. Perhaps many CES exhibitors didn&#8217;t so much &#8216;forget&#8217; the consumer as simply retrain their eyes on the prize, IE businesses and investors that still have plenty of money to burn in the AI sector.<\/p>\n<p>Yeah, I even made myself shudder with all of that cynicism\u2014so, allow me to shake some of it off with a few reasons to be hopeful about consumer hardware. For a start, it&#8217;s worth noting that as far as the &#8216;consumer&#8217; part of CES goes, Be Quiet remembered the assignment with its <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/hardware\/cooling\/be-quiet-keeps-the-consumer-in-ces-with-new-pc-components-including-a-dashing-new-dark-rock-6-cooler\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/hardware\/cooling\/be-quiet-keeps-the-consumer-in-ces-with-new-pc-components-including-a-dashing-new-dark-rock-6-cooler\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">suite of near-silent PC components<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"vanilla-image-block\" style=\"padding-top:56.25%;\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/kq7tuZ5uvuquWvXxm8U8iV.jpg\" alt=\"Crucial DDR5-5600 2x16GB memory kit close up\"   loading=\"lazy\" data-new-v2-image=\"true\" data-original-mos=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/kq7tuZ5uvuquWvXxm8U8iV.jpg\" data-pin-media=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/kq7tuZ5uvuquWvXxm8U8iV.jpg\" class=\"inline\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<p>(Image credit: Future)<\/p>\n<p id=\"c3cb715f-c56a-406d-9dc7-9b1d0fd46353\">Furthermore Micron, who we were all pretty sure was done with consumer-grade memory and storage <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/hardware\/the-ram-crisis-is-just-getting-started-micron-makes-the-difficult-decision-to-abandon-the-consumer-memory-business-to-focus-on-supplying-ai-data-centers\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/hardware\/the-ram-crisis-is-just-getting-started-micron-makes-the-difficult-decision-to-abandon-the-consumer-memory-business-to-focus-on-supplying-ai-data-centers\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">when it shuttered its Crucial sub-brand<\/a> last year, also announced <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/hardware\/ssds\/micron-isnt-done-with-consumer-ssds-after-all-unveiling-a-pcie-5-0-qlc-drive-that-should-be-both-affordable-and-fast\/#viafoura-comments\" target=\"_blank\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/hardware\/ssds\/micron-isnt-done-with-consumer-ssds-after-all-unveiling-a-pcie-5-0-qlc-drive-that-should-be-both-affordable-and-fast\/#viafoura-comments\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">an extremely speedy PCIe 5.0 QLC client SSD<\/a> this week.
