{"id":361694,"date":"2026-01-09T22:49:14","date_gmt":"2026-01-09T22:49:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/361694\/"},"modified":"2026-01-09T22:49:14","modified_gmt":"2026-01-09T22:49:14","slug":"beauden-barretts-role-in-covering-21-million-all-blacks-hole-after-ratcliffe-hook","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/361694\/","title":{"rendered":"Beauden Barrett&#8217;s role in covering $21 million All Blacks hole after Ratcliffe hook"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When Jim Ratcliffe shockingly walked away from a six-year deal three years early, the All Blacks, New Zealand Rugby had a NZ$21 million hole to fill, but Beauden Barrett stepped up to the plate.<\/p>\n<p>That is according to an extensive report by the New Zealand Herald, which detailed the role the veteran star played in getting a crucial deal with Gallagher Insurance over the line.<\/p>\n<p>In February of last year, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.planetrugby.com\/news\/all-blacks-the-latest-to-feel-sir-jim-ratcliffes-cost-cutting-wrath-as-new-zealand-rugby-launches-legal-action\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ratcliffe went on a brutal cost-cutting rampage<\/a>, which the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.planetrugby.com\/team\/new-zealand\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">All Blacks<\/a> fell victim to as INEOS abandoned their deal with New Zealand Rugby \u2013 failing to pay the first instalment of 2025.<\/p>\n<p>This left the union reeling, launching legal action against the company owned by the minority shareholder of Manchester United. Still, NZ Rugby needed to fill the shortfall and quickly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe might as well be a Gallagher employee\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a rel=\"noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/sport\/rugby\/all-blacks\/the-business-of-the-all-blacks-beauden-barrett-and-the-124-billion-american-business-giant-that-helped-pull-new-zealand-rugby-out-of-a-jam\/premium\/GVOVEVXDNVBJDCJZ6QBHG6PA6A\/\" target=\"_blank\">Herald<\/a>, the deal was done in the matter of a fortnight, with NZR chairman David Kirk and Gallagher\u2019s Auckland-based Australasian boss Steve Lockwood being instrumental in talking first before they and the NZR leadership team took the proposal to Gallagher.<\/p>\n<p>Part of the successful bid was the inclusion of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.planetrugby.com\/tag\/beauden-barrett\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Barrett<\/a> as an ambassador for the company \u2013 which was a critical cog in the deal, the report states.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe might as well be a Gallagher employee,\u201d Gallagher chief marketing officer Chris Mead told the publication.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe hope we take lots of these players and help them find a career path after, but I feel like Beauden could be sitting in the office right next to me. I love the fact \u2013 I never knew until tonight \u2013 that they have their number,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s really cute. \u2018I\u2019m [All Black number 1115] and proud of it.\u2019 I get the fact that in New Zealand, every kid wants to play for the All Blacks and their families are proud of them. I think that\u2019s a wonderful thing \u2013 and for us to be identified with that culture.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While details of the Gallagher deal have not been revealed, it is understood that the $21 million hole left by Ineos has been filled.<\/p>\n<p>Pat Gallagher added that while he is pleased to have his company\u2019s name on the All Blacks shorts, he is open to the idea of it featuring on the front of the jersey.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the right price, you bet,\u201d he said. \u201cRight now, I\u2019m happy with the bum.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Want more from Planet Rugby?
