Unlike traditional studios, which often combine upfront salaries with back-end participation to some players if a film or series succeeds, Netflix typically pays cast and crew an upfront fee determined in advance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cWe wanted to institute fairness and address some of the real issues that are present and urgent for our business,\u201d Affleck told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/01\/09\/business\/media\/netflix-the-rip-ben-affleck-matt-damon.html\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/01\/09\/business\/media\/netflix-the-rip-ben-affleck-matt-damon.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The New York Times<\/a>. \u201cThis deal is fundamental, philosophically, to the ideas we had in starting this company.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tUnder the deal for <a data-id=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/the-rip-trailer-ben-affleck-matt-damon-netflix-1236366729\/\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/the-rip-trailer-ben-affleck-matt-damon-netflix-1236366729\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Rip<\/a> \u2014 a movie that follows a pair of Miami cops that find hidden money \u2014 all 1,200 people involved in the nearly $100 million production will be eligible for a one-time bonus if the film meets performance expectations. The movie will be evaluated over its first 90 days on Netflix and measured against other titles on the platform, with the idea that there\u2019s a potential for an additional payout to the crew, according to The New York Times.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cEverybody who\u2019s in this movie, from top to bottom, or worked on the crew, will be bonused according to metrics which we\u2019ve already defined and they\u2019ve shared with us,\u201d Affleck said, though he did not specify what those metrics were.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tAffleck and Damon <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/matt-damon-ben-affleck-artists-equity-production-company-1235266633\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">launched Artists Equity in late 2022<\/a>, with the company sharing profits with all who work on their movies. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tOn The Rip, Affleck credited Netflix co-chief executive Ted Sarandos for supporting Artists Equity\u2019s approach. \u201cI thought this is clearly somebody who cares about this business, wants it to work, is doing very well and understands the value of filmmakers and performers and artists,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tOne intriguing sidenote to the deal is the financial backing behind Artists Equity. The company is financed by Gerry Cardinale and his RedBird Capital Partners, which has committed more than $100 million to the production venture.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tBut Cardinale and RedBird are also engaged in a fierce battle with Netflix over another prize: Warner Bros. Discovery.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tNetflix has a signed deal to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/business\/business-news\/netflix-warner-bros-deal-hollywood-1236443081\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/business\/business-news\/netflix-warner-bros-deal-hollywood-1236443081\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">acquire Warner Bros. for $82.7 billion<\/a>, with the ambition of bringing the fabled studio into its fold. But the deal with Netflix came after WBD spurned David Ellison\u2019s Paramount, which had been pursuing a merger since the late summer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tRedBird is a strategic investor and partner to Paramount and Ellison, with a number of RedBird operating executives joining Paramount after Ellison\u2019s deal closed to help run the company, including president Jeff Shell.
