Like David Tennant<\/a> before him, Peter Capaldi was a fan of Doctor Who<\/a> before he was officially given the keys to the Tardis. <\/p>\n Indeed, the 67-year-old actor earned the ire of the sci-fi series production team when he tried to become the secretary of the official DW fan club despite the fact that he was just 14 years old.<\/p>\n In fact, young Peter was so enthusiastic in his correspondence that Sarah Newman, a BBC<\/a> secretary, reportedly wrote to the fan club where she wished that the Daleks would exterminate him.<\/p>\n Ultimately, though, Peter would have the last laugh when he was cast as the fan favourite Twelfth Doctor \u2013 replacing Matt Smith.<\/a><\/p>\n However, just because he loves the iconic series doesn\u2019t mean he can\u2019t see the flaws, and while he still enjoys the show Peter does think modern Who has a problem.<\/p>\n \t\t\t\tGet personalised updates on Doctor Who\t\t\t<\/p>\n Wake up to find news on your TV shows in your inbox every morning with Metro\u2019s TV Newsletter.<\/p>\n Sign up to our newsletter<\/a> and then select your show in the link we\u2019ll send you so we can get TV news tailored to you.<\/p>\n \u2018The show became very, very big,\u2019 he told the Half the Picture podcast<\/a>. \u2018It was never like that when I loved it. So it became a different thing.\u2019<\/p>\n \t\t He then explained how, back when John Pertwee or Tom Baker were playing the titular Time Lord, they\u2019d spend most of the year making the show and then promoting it. <\/p>\n Now, actors are expected to be brand ambassadors for the BBC. <\/p>\n \u2018It wasn\u2019t this in-your-face kind of thing that suddenly was really important to the BBC, or suddenly really important to a brand that had to be maintained.<\/p>\n \u2018It was just a show that some kids really loved, and other kids didn\u2019t care about, but wanted to watch football, or you grew out of. It became this sort of very important thing \u2013 I think less in a cultural way and more in an economic way.\u2019<\/p>\n In that way, Capaldi believes the show has become a victim of its own success, noting that the show \u2018he loved\u2019 was a tiny thing that \u2018just survived\u2019 until it didn\u2019t.<\/p>\n \t\t During the same interview, Peter admitted to being \u2018scared\u2019 by his growing profile while playing the Doctor, explaining how David Tennant had warned him this would be the case.<\/p>\n \u2018David said to me, \u201cYou\u2019ll just be much more visible,\u201d and I didn\u2019t know what he meant, but I quickly learned\u2026 <\/p>\n \u2018It was scary because I knew life would change, and it\u2019s a genie that once it\u2019s out of the bottle, you can\u2019t put it back. If you lose your privacy to that degree, it\u2019s an extreme feeling; it\u2019s [makes you] quite vulnerable.\u2019<\/p>\n Despite that, Peter admitted he found the experience \u2018wonderful\u2019 and enjoyed interacting with fans, and he praised Ncuti Gatwa<\/a>\u2019s Doctor. <\/p>\n \t\t Doctor Who\u2019s future has been the subject of intense media speculation in recent months.
