Modern astrophysics, however, has managed to reconstruct its full life story – including the final chapter. That ending isn’t a dramatic explosion full of regret, but a slow transformation that will completely change the balance of the Solar System.

What is a red giant?

A red giant is a star in a late stage of its life, much larger and redder in colour. It forms when low- and medium-mass stars (like our Sun) run out of hydrogen in their core and begin to fuse helium instead. As this happens, their outer layers expand and cool, they become extremely luminous and can even engulf nearby planets.

Although the very end will come in about five billion years, Earth will start to feel the consequences long before that. The Sun’s gradual increase in energy will change our atmosphere, dry up the seas and eventually wipe out any complex life. The timetable has been drawn up and it leaves little room for doubt.

The Sun as a red giant: the beginning of the end

In roughly five billion years, the Sun will have exhausted the hydrogen that powers its core. That moment will mark the start of its red giant phase. The star will swell to an enormous size, its diameter reaching more than two hundred times what it is today.

A viral post summarised this fate in dramatic fashion, saying NASA had “set a date for the end of the world: the year 1,000,002,021”, describing how the Sun will puff up, oxygen will run out and temperatures will soar. The numbers may be tongue in cheek, but the underlying scenario matches current models: the inner planets will be hit hard.

After shedding most of its mass, the Sun will end its life as a dense white dwarf, unable to sustain life around it.

This growth won’t just be a visual change. The radiation emitted will become much more intense, directly affecting the inner planets. Mercury and Venus will be swallowed by the Sun’s outer atmosphere, and Earth will sit right on the edge of this deadly embrace.

Even if our planet just avoids being physically engulfed, surface conditions will be brutal. Temperatures will skyrocket, climate balance will collapse and life as we know it simply won’t be able to survive.

Evaporation of the oceans and loss of the atmosphere

The first major blow will come well before the Sun reaches its maximum size. Around one billion years from now, the Sun’s increased brightness will be enough to start steadily evaporating Earth’s oceans. Water, the key ingredient for life, will begin to escape into space.

As water vapour builds up in the upper atmosphere, solar radiation will split its molecules. The hydrogen will be lost for good, and Earth will become progressively drier. The seas will shrink away until they’re nothing more than a geological memory.

With less water and a weakened atmosphere, our planet will lose its ability to regulate temperature. The protective shield against radiation will fade, and the surface will be exposed to a much more hostile environment. Long before the Sun itself dies, Earth will already be a dead world.

The Sun’s final act as a white dwarf

After the red giant stage, the Sun will enter a period of instability. It will start burning helium in its core and go through thermal pulses that blow away much of its outer material into space. Each of these episodes will reduce its size and energy.

What’s left at the end will be a white dwarf: an extremely dense core, about the size of Earth but with a mass similar to the Sun’s current one. There will be no active nuclear reactions, just residual heat slowly leaking away over billions of years.

By then, if Earth still exists as a separate body, it will be a sterile rock orbiting a faded stellar remnant – no atmosphere, no water and no chance of supporting life. The Solar System will have slipped into a quiet, cold stage, and our once-bright star will be only a faint, cooling ember in the dark.

The Sun will one day swell into a red giant, turning Earth into a dry, lifeless world.
